Part One
The creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah in summary
First Issue: What Faith in the Last Day Includes
Al-yawm al-ākhir (الْيَوْم الْآخِر), the Last Day, is called so because there is no day after it: the people of Paradise settle in their dwellings and the people of the Fire in theirs. Faith in it is one of the six pillars of faith that the Prophet ﷺ named to Jibrīl, and the Qurʾān joins it to faith in Allah again and again: “whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day”.
Faith in it includes everything that the Prophet ﷺ said comes after death. The questioning in the grave and its bliss or punishment. The blowing of the Horn, the Resurrection of bodies, the gathering, the standing, the reckoning and the handing of the records. The Scale, the Basin, the Bridge and the intercession. Paradise and the Fire, both of which are created now and neither of which will perish. A Muslim affirms each of these as it came, with its meaning, and does not ask how.

The texts of the Qurʾān and the Sunnah
Second Issue: The Questioning and the Punishment of the Grave
Allah said of the people of Pharaoh in Sūrat Ghāfir:
The Fire: they are exposed to it morning and evening. And on the Day the Hour arrives: Admit the people of Pharaoh into the severest punishment.
Sūrat Ghāfir, 40:46 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)
They are exposed to the Fire morning and evening now, before the Hour arrives, and then they are admitted to the severest punishment. That is the punishment of the grave stated in the Book. The Prophet ﷺ described the questioning.
Al-Bukhārī reported in his Ṣaḥīḥ from Anas ibn Mālik that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
When the servant is placed in his grave and his companions turn away from him, and he hears the beat of their sandals, two angels come to him and sit him up and say: What did you say about this man, Muḥammad ﷺ? As for the believer, he says: I bear witness that he is the servant of Allah and His Messenger. It is said to him: Look at your seat in the Fire; Allah has exchanged it for you for a seat in Paradise. And he sees them both. As for the hypocrite and the disbeliever, it is said to him: What did you say about this man? He says: I do not know; I used to say what the people said. It is said: You did not know and you did not follow. And he is struck a blow with hammers of iron, and he gives a cry that everything near him hears except the two kinds, men and jinn.

“I used to say what the people said.” The one who failed the questioning is the one whose religion was what everyone around him said. That is why the first question after death is about the Messenger ﷺ: whether a man took his religion from him or from the people.
Third Issue: The Scale, and the Two Abodes
Allah said in Sūrat al-Anbiyāʾ:
And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be wronged at all. And if there is even the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as reckoners.
Sūrat al-Anbiyāʾ, 21:47 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)
The scales are real scales, with two pans, in which the deeds, the records and the doers are weighed, as the authentic Sunnah explains, and they are “of justice” because nothing in them is wronged. Then the people go to their abodes.
He said of the people of Paradise in Sūrat al-Bayyinah:
Their reward with their Lord will be gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. That is for whoever fears his Lord.
Sūrat al-Bayyinah, 98:8 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)
“Forever”, abadan, and the same word is said of the disbelievers in the Fire in Sūrat al-Nisāʾ, al-Aḥzāb and al-Jinn. The Prophet ﷺ said that death will be brought in the form of a ram and slaughtered between Paradise and the Fire, and it will be said: O people of Paradise, eternity and no death; O people of the Fire, eternity and no death.
Part Three
The claims of the opponents and their refutation
“There is no punishment in the grave; the Qurʾān does not mention it”
The claim
Said by some of the Muʿtazilah and the Khawārij of old, and by the Qurʾāniyyūn and modernists now
The punishment of the grave is not in the Qurʾān. The reports of it come from single narrators, which are not accepted in creed, and the dead body in the grave is seen not to be punished.
The response
First, the Qurʾān. The verse of Ghāfir above states that the people of Pharaoh are exposed to the Fire morning and evening before the Hour, and Allah said of the people of Nūḥ: “They were drowned and admitted to a Fire”, with the particle fa, which joins without delay. Allah said: “We will punish them twice, then they will be returned to a great punishment”, and the great punishment is the Hereafter, so one of the two is before it.
Secondly, the Sunnah. The reports of the grave are not from single narrators. The Prophet ﷺ sought refuge from the punishment of the grave in every prayer and commanded it, and it was reported by ʿĀʾishah, Anas, Ibn ʿAbbās, Abū Hurayrah, al-Barāʾ, Zayd ibn Thābit and others, in the two Ṣaḥīḥs and beyond, so that the imams counted them mass-transmitted in meaning.
Thirdly, “we do not see it”. The punishment is of the soul and the body together in a world that the living do not perceive, just as a sleeper is punished in his dream while the one sitting beside him sees nothing. A man’s failure to perceive a thing is not knowledge that it does not exist. The one who believes in the angels and the jinn, whom he does not see, has no ground to deny this.
“The Scale is a figure for justice”
The claim
Said by the Muʿtazilah
The deeds are accidents and cannot be weighed, so the Scale is only a figure of speech for the justice of Allah in judging.
The response
The verse says “We place the scales”, in the plural, and “if there is even the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth”. A figure for justice is not placed, is not plural, and does not weigh a mustard seed. The Prophet ﷺ said that two words are heavy on the Scale, “Glorified is Allah and by His praise, glorified is Allah the Great”, and that the card with “there is no god but Allah” outweighs ninety-nine scrolls.
As for “deeds are accidents”, Allah is able to give them bodies and to weigh them, and He is able to weigh the records in which they are written and the doers themselves, and the Sunnah mentions all three. The objection is the old one: the Muʿtazilī measures what Allah can do by what he can picture.
“Paradise and the Fire will come to an end”
The claim
Said by Jahm ibn Ṣafwān, and the end of the Fire by some of the Muʿtazilah; also attributed by opponents to Ibn Taymiyyah
Paradise and the Fire will perish, because nothing can last forever but Allah, and an endless series of events in the future is impossible.
Its origin Jahm ibn Ṣafwān.
The response
Jahm said it because of his premise that events without end are impossible, the same premise from which he denied that Allah acts. The imams declared his saying disbelief, and al-Ṭaḥāwī wrote in his creed that Paradise and the Fire are created, never perish and never end. Allah said “forever” of both, and the slaughter of death settles it.
The Muslim holds to what the texts say of the disbelievers: “abiding therein forever”. As for what is attributed to Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim on the ending of the Fire, their own words are given in the next section.
“Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim held that the Fire will come to an end”
The claim
Said by the opponents of Ibn Taymiyyah among the later Ashʿarīs, and by some who wish to make the punishment of the disbelievers temporary
Ibn Taymiyyah and his student Ibn al-Qayyim, whom the Salafīs take as their imams, held that the Fire will come to an end and its people will leave it. So the eternity of the Fire is not the creed of the Salaf, and the Salafīs have no right to declare Jahm astray for his saying.
The response
Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (raḥimahullāh) reported the agreement of the Salaf on the eternity of Paradise and the Fire in plain words, and he named the one who opposed it.
He said, in Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā:
And the Salaf of the Ummah and its imams, and all of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah, have agreed that among the created things there are those that are not annihilated and do not perish altogether, such as Paradise, the Fire, the Throne and other than them. None held that all created things perish except a group of the innovating people of kalām, such as Jahm ibn Ṣafwān and those of the Muʿtazilah and their like who agreed with him.

As for Ibn al-Qayyim (raḥimahullāh), he set out the arguments of those who held that the punishment of the Fire ends in Ḥādī al-Arwāḥ and in Shifāʾ al-ʿAlīl, reporting the reports attributed to some of the Companions and answering some of them. But in al-Wābil al-Ṣayyib he stated the matter without ambiguity: the abode of the purely wicked does not perish, and the abode that perishes is the abode of the sinful monotheists, who are taken out of the Fire after being punished.
Ibn al-Qayyim said in al-Wābil al-Ṣayyib:
As for the Fire, it is the abode of filth in sayings and deeds, in food and drink, and the abode of the filthy. Allah, Exalted is He, said: {So that Allah may distinguish the wicked from the good, and place the wicked one upon another, and heap them all together, and put them into Hell. It is they who are the losers} [al-Anfāl: 37]. So Allah gathers the wicked one to another and heaps it up as a thing heaped one part upon another, then He places it in Hell with its people, and there is nothing in it but what is wicked. And since the people are of three levels, good with no wickedness mixed in it, wicked with no good in it, and others in whom there is wickedness and good, their abodes are three: the abode of pure good, and the abode of pure wickedness, and these two abodes do not perish; and an abode for the one who has wickedness and good with him, and that is the abode that perishes, and it is the abode of the sinners. For not one of the sinners of the people of tawḥīd will remain in Hell.

Hence, the saying of Ahl al-Sunnah is that both abodes remain and never perish, and this is the statement of Ibn Taymiyyah in the passage above and of Ibn al-Qayyim in al-Wābil. Whatever is reported from either of them in discussing the arguments of the other view does not change the creed of the Salaf, for the creed is taken from the Book and the Sunnah and the consensus, and not from the discussion of a scholar. Allah said of the disbelievers: “Abiding therein forever” in three places of His Book (al-Nisāʾ 169, al-Aḥzāb 65, al-Jinn 23), and the Prophet ﷺ informed that death will be brought in the form of a ram and slaughtered between Paradise and the Fire, and it will be said: O people of Paradise, eternity without death, and O people of the Fire, eternity without death.
And the comparison with Jahm fails in any case. Jahm said that Paradise and the Fire both perish, and with them all created things, because he held that events without end are impossible. That premise is what the imams declared disbelief, for it denies the eternity of the bliss that Allah promised His servants and denies that Allah continues to act. Ibn Taymiyyah himself named Jahm in the passage above as the one who opposed the consensus. So whoever cites Ibn Taymiyyah in defence of Jahm has cited the man who refuted Jahm on this very question.
