Prophethood: Who a Prophet Is and How He Is Known

On: Nubuwwah, Prophethood in Islam, signs of prophethood, Dalail al-Nubuwwah, seal of the prophets, Khatam al-Nabiyyin, Qadiani, Ahmadiyya

What nubuwwah and risālah mean, how the truthfulness of a prophet is known, the signs given to the Prophet ﷺ and the greatest of them, the Qurʾān, the seal of the prophets, and the answers to those who make the signs ordinary events and to those who claimed prophethood after him.

Part One

The creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah in summary

First Issue: The Words Nabī and Rasūl

Nabī (نَبِيّ) is from nabaʾ (نَبَأ), news of something great: the prophet is the one to whom Allah gives news of the unseen and who gives that news to others. It is also read from nabwah (نَبْوَة), height, for the prophet is raised above others in rank. Both meanings are true of him. Rasūl (رَسُول) is the one sent with a message, from irsāl, sending.

Every messenger is a prophet, and not every prophet is a messenger. The more established statement of the distinction is that the messenger is sent to a people who disbelieve or who have abandoned the law, with a message to deliver to them, while the prophet is sent to confirm and teach the law of a messenger before him among believers. Allah said in Sūrat al-Ḥajj: “And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet”, and the conjunction shows that they are two.

Prophethood is a choice of Allah, not a rank that a man earns by his discipline or his intelligence. Allah said: “Allah chooses from the angels messengers and from mankind.” The philosophers who said that prophethood is a strength of imagination and of soul that the perfected man reaches have made it something acquired, and from that door every false prophet after the Prophet ﷺ entered.

Allah, the Exalted, said in Sūrat al-Ḥajj:

Allah chooses from the angels messengers and from mankind. Indeed, Allah is Hearing, Seeing.

Second Issue: Why the Messengers Were Sent

Allah said in Sūrat al-Nisāʾ:

Messengers as bringers of good news and warners, so that mankind will have no argument against Allah after the messengers. And Allah is Mighty, Wise.

Sūrat al-Nisāʾ, 4:165 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)

The proof against men is established by the messengers. Reason knows that there is a Lord and that He deserves thanks, and the natural disposition knows Him, but the details of how He is to be worshipped, what He loves and what He hates, and what will happen after death, are known only by revelation. That is why the messengers came with tawḥīd first, and every one of them said to his people: “Worship Allah; you have no god other than Him.”

Third Issue: How a Prophet Is Known, and the Greatest Sign

The truthfulness of a prophet is known in many ways: the signs that Allah gives him which no man can bring the like of, his own truthfulness and character before his mission, the content of what he calls to, the fulfilment of what he foretold, and the victory Allah gives him and his followers. The theologians reduced it to one way, the breaking of custom, and then could not tell the prophet from the sorcerer except by his claim. The Prophet ﷺ named the greatest of his signs himself.

Al-Bukhārī reported in his Ṣaḥīḥ from Abū Hurayrah that the Prophet ﷺ said:

There is no prophet among the prophets but he was given signs like which mankind believed. What I was given is a revelation that Allah revealed to me, and I hope that I will have the most followers of them on the Day of Resurrection.

The signs of the prophets before him ended with them: the staff and the sea of Mūsā, the healing of ʿĪsā. The Qurʾān remains, and Allah challenged the Arabs, the masters of eloquence, to bring a sūrah like it, and they did not, and they chose war over that sūrah. Every Muslim today holds his Prophet’s sign in his hand. And besides it there are the splitting of the moon, the water from between his fingers, the food that increased, and the trunk that wept, which the imams gathered in the books of the signs of prophethood.

Fourth Issue: The Seal of the Prophets

Allah said in Sūrat al-Aḥzāb:

Muḥammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets. And Allah is Knowing of all things.

Sūrat al-Aḥzāb, 33:40 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)

He said “seal of the prophets” and not only “seal of the messengers”, so that no one would claim a prophethood without a new law. The Prophet ﷺ gave a likeness for it.

Al-Bukhārī reported in his Ṣaḥīḥ from Abū Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

The likeness of me and the prophets before me is that of a man who built a house and made it good and beautiful, except for the place of one brick in a corner. The people began going round it and admiring it, and saying: Why was this brick not put in place? He said: I am that brick, and I am the seal of the prophets.

Part Three

The claims of the opponents and their refutation

“Seal” means the best of them, or prophethood without a law continues

The claim

Said by Mirzā Ghulām Aḥmad of Qadian and the Aḥmadiyyah, and before them by some of the philosophising Ṣūfīs

Khātam al-nabiyyīn means the seal of approval, the most perfect of the prophets, not the last of them. A prophet who follows the law of Muḥammad and brings no new law can still come after him.

Its origin Ibn ʿArabī’s doctrine that legislative prophethood ended and general prophethood continues.

The response

The verse, the ḥadīth of the brick, and the consensus close every door of it. In the ḥadīth the house is complete when the brick is placed, and nothing is added after a completed house. The Prophet ﷺ also said, as Muslim reports: “There is no prophet after me.” He said to ʿAlī: “You are to me as Hārūn was to Mūsā, except that there is no prophet after me.” Hārūn was a prophet without a new law, following the law of Mūsā, and that is exactly the kind of prophethood the Prophet ﷺ denied after himself.

And the language. The khātam is the seal that closes a thing and the ring with which it is sealed. Both readings, khātim and khātam, mean the last, by the agreement of the mufassirūn. The Companions understood it so, and they fought Musaylimah and al-Aswad and Ṭulayḥah for claiming prophethood, though Musaylimah testified that Muḥammad was the Messenger of Allah. Whoever claims prophethood after him, or believes such a claimant, has belied the Book and left Islām by the consensus of the Muslims.

“The miracles are natural events, or stories meant as symbols”

The claim

Said by the philosophers, and by modernist writers who followed the European critics of revelation

The signs of the prophets were either natural events that the people did not understand, or symbols in the stories with no event behind them. A rational religion does not need miracles.

The response

The one who says it has to deal with the Qurʾān before he deals with the stories. It is a sign present now, and he cannot call it a natural event that the people did not understand, because it is in front of him, and he cannot bring a sūrah like it either.

As for the others, the Creator of the laws of nature is not bound by them. He made fire burn and He made it cool for Ibrāhīm; He made the sea flow and He split it for Mūsā. Whoever believes that Allah created the heavens and the earth from nothing has no ground on which to say that He cannot split the moon. The denial of miracles is the denial that Allah acts by His will, which is the doctrine of the philosophers that the world proceeds from Him by necessity. It was answered in the chapters on the volitional attributes and on Allah never ceasing to act.

“The miracles of Muḥammad ﷺ reach us only by single reports, and they are not known with certainty”

The claim

Said by the Christian polemicists and the orientalists, and by Muslims influenced by them who accept only the Qurʾān as a sign

The miracles that the Muslims attribute to their Prophet, the water flowing from his fingers, the increase of food, the weeping of the palm trunk, are reported only in books of ḥadīth written long after him by single narrators. They give no certain knowledge and cannot establish a prophethood.

The response

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (raḥimahullāh) answered this in al-Jawāb al-Ṣaḥīḥ li-man Baddala Dīn al-Masīḥ, written in reply to the Christians. He showed that these signs were not seen by one or two men but by armies, and that they were transmitted in every generation by more people than transmitted rulings that no Muslim doubts.

He said:

And of these reports there are those that are in the Qurʾān, and those that are mass-transmitted (mutawātir), known to the common people and the elite, such as the water flowing from between his fingers, the increase of food, the yearning of the palm trunk, and the like. For each of these was reported by mass transmission and spread widely, and the Ummah transmitted it generation after generation, the later from the earlier. There is no level of the levels of the Ummah except that these signs are transmitted, well known and widespread in it. More transmitted them than transmitted much of the Qurʾān; more of the Ummah heard and transmitted them than heard and transmitted many of the verses of the Qurʾān, and more than heard and transmitted that he used to make the two prostrations of forgetfulness in the prayer, and than heard and transmitted the minimum amounts of zakāh and its obligations, and even the times of the prayer and the number of its units. The transmission of those spread only because of the constant practice of them. As for these signs, more people transmitted them by specific reports than transmitted the times of the prayer. That is because many of the signs of the Messenger took place in the sight of a great multitude of people, who witnessed those signs, as the people of al-Ḥudaybiyah, who were one thousand five hundred, witnessed the water flowing from between his fingers.

Hence, the one who rejects these reports as single narrations has to reject with them the times of the prayer, the number of its units and the amounts of zakāh, for they came by fewer specific reports than the signs did. The army at al-Ḥudaybiyah drank and made wuḍūʾ from water that flowed from his fingers; the army at Tabūk was fed from a little food; the people of the Trench ate from the food of Jābir; and the palm trunk wept in the mosque on a Friday before the congregation. Every one of these was told by many Companions to many Followers, and al-Bukhārī and Muslim and the compilers after them gathered the routes. A thing seen by fifteen hundred men and reported by them to their children is not a story of one narrator.

And the Christian who raises the objection is the last man entitled to it. His Gospels are four accounts that do not name their sources, that contradict one another, and of which the earliest manuscripts come from centuries after ʿĪsā, with no chain of transmitters at all. If the miracles of Muḥammad ﷺ, transmitted by known men with connected chains, give no knowledge, then the miracles that he attributes to ʿĪsā are known to him only through the Qurʾān, which confirms them, and through the Muslims.

“Ibn ʿAbbās said that ʿĪsā died: mutawaffīkah means ‘I will cause you to die’”

The claim

Said by the Qādiyāniyyah, who need ʿĪsā dead so that their false prophet can take his place, and repeated by modernists who deny the signs of the Hour

Allah said to ʿĪsā: “I will take you (mutawaffīkah) and raise you to Myself” (Āl ʿImrān 55), and Ibn ʿAbbās explained mutawaffīkah as “I will cause you to die”. So ʿĪsā died like every other prophet, he will not return, and the reports of his descent are to be interpreted or rejected.

The response

Tawaffā in the language of the Arabs is to take a thing in full. The Arab says tawaffaytu ḥaqqī min fulān, I took my right from so-and-so in full, and death is called wafāh because the soul is taken in full; and sleep is called wafāh in the Book: “And it is He who takes you (yatawaffākum) by night” (al-Anʿām 60), and “Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die, in their sleep” (al-Zumar 42). So the word does not by itself mean death, and the one who makes it mean death in every place has denied two verses of the Book in order to deny a third.

Imām al-Ṭabarī (raḥimahullāh), the imam of the mufassirūn, gathered the sayings of the Salaf on the verse, and then he gave his judgement and its reason.

Al-Ṭabarī said in Jāmiʿ al-Bayān:

Abū Jaʿfar said: The most correct of these sayings in our view is the saying of the one who said: “Its meaning is: I will take you from the earth and raise you to Myself”, because of the mass transmission of the reports from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he said: ʿĪsā ibn Maryam will descend and kill the Dajjāl, then he will remain on the earth for a period that he mentioned, whose length the narrations differ over, then he will die, and the Muslims will pray over him and bury him. Ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us, from Salamah, from Ibn Isḥāq, from Muḥammad ibn Muslim al-Zuhrī, from Ḥanẓalah ibn ʿAlī al-Aslamī, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Allah will surely send down ʿĪsā ibn Maryam as a just judge and an equitable imam.”

Hence, the imam of the mufassirūn settled the verse by the Sunnah, and he named the Sunnah mutawātir. The descent of ʿĪsā is not a single report to be argued over; it is in the two Ṣaḥīḥs and in every book of the Sunnah, and al-Bukhārī placed it in the Book of the Prophets.

Al-Bukhārī reported from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib that Abū Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“By the One in whose Hand is my soul, the son of Maryam will soon descend among you as a just judge. He will break the cross, kill the swine and abolish the jizyah, and wealth will overflow until no one accepts it, until a single prostration is better than the world and what is in it.” Then Abū Hurayrah said: Recite, if you wish: {And there is none of the People of the Book but will surely believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them}.

Abū Hurayrah explained “before his death” as the death of ʿĪsā, after his descent, when the People of the Book will believe in him. So ʿĪsā has a death that is still to come, and the verse of al-Nisāʾ speaks of it, and the verse of al-Nisāʾ before it says: “They did not kill him and they did not crucify him… rather, Allah raised him to Himself” (al-Nisāʾ 157–158). Raising to Allah is not the death of the body in a grave in Kashmir, as the liar of Qadian claimed; it is the answer to those who said that they killed him.

As for the narration of Ibn ʿAbbās, it comes through ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭalḥah, and the critics stated that he did not hear the tafsīr from Ibn ʿAbbās, so it is a broken chain. And even on its wording, al-Ṭabarī reported another saying of the Salaf, that the order of the verse is reversed: I will raise you to Myself, and then take you in death after I send you down to the world. Whoever leaves the mutawātir Sunnah, the explanation of Abū Hurayrah, the choice of al-Ṭabarī and the agreement of the Ummah, for a broken chain that he does not even read correctly, has not followed Ibn ʿAbbās. He has followed his own prophet, and his own prophet is a liar by the text of the Book: “but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets.”

“Dhū al-Qarnayn is Alexander the Macedonian, so the Qurʾān praises a pagan and copies the Alexander legend”

The claim

Said by the orientalists and the Christian polemicists; and some later mufassirūn and philosophers made the identification, and al-Rāzī mentioned it and raised the difficulty that it would make the school of Aristotle praised

The Dhū al-Qarnayn of Sūrat al-Kahf is Alexander the Great, the son of Philip of Macedon and the pupil of Aristotle. The Qurʾān therefore praised an idolater as a righteous servant of Allah, and it took its story from the Syriac Alexander legend that was circulating in the time of the Prophet ﷺ.

The response

The imams of tafsīr and history distinguished the two and declared the identification an error. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr (raḥimahullāh) said in his Tafsīr, after mentioning a weak report that makes Dhū al-Qarnayn a young man of the Romans who built Alexandria:

Ibn Kathīr said in Tafsīr al-Qurʾān al-ʿAẓīm:

And among what is objectionable in it is that he was of the Romans. The one who was of the Romans is only the second Alexander, the son of Philip the Macedonian, by whom the Romans date their history. As for the first, al-Azraqī and others mentioned that he circled the House with Ibrāhīm al-Khalīl, upon him be peace, when he first built it, and believed in him and followed him, and his minister was al-Khaḍir, upon him be peace. As for the second, he is Alexander son of Philip, the Macedonian, the Greek, and his minister was Aristotle, the well-known philosopher, and Allah knows best. He is the one from whose kingdom the nation of the Romans dates its history, and he was about three hundred years before the Messiah, upon him be peace.

And Ibn al-Qayyim (raḥimahullāh) separated them by their religion, which is the distinction that matters, in his account of the philosophers in Ighāthat al-Lahfān.

Ibn al-Qayyim said:

And among their kings is Alexander the Macedonian, the son of Philip. He is not Alexander Dhū al-Qarnayn whose story Allah, Exalted is He, related in the Qurʾān; rather, between the two are many centuries, and between them in religion is the greatest difference. Dhū al-Qarnayn was a righteous man, a worshipper of Allah alone, who believed in Allah, Exalted is He, His angels, His Books, His messengers and the Last Day; he fought the worshippers of idols, reached the east and the west of the earth, and built the barrier between the people and Yaʾjūj and Maʾjūj. As for this Macedonian, he was a mushrik who worshipped idols, he and the people of his kingdom, and the Christians date their history by him. Aristotle was his minister, and he was a mushrik who worshipped idols, and he is the one who invaded Dārā son of Dārā, the king of the Persians, in the heart of his own land.

Hence, the description in Sūrat al-Kahf excludes the Macedonian by its own words. Dhū al-Qarnayn says: “This is a mercy from my Lord; and when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level” (al-Kahf 98). He punishes the wrongdoer and rewards the one “who believes and does righteousness” (al-Kahf 87–88). That is the speech of a believer in Allah and the Last Day, and the Macedonian and his minister Aristotle worshipped idols and denied the Resurrection, as Ibn al-Qayyim said. The figure of about three hundred years before the Messiah, given by Ibn Kathīr, agrees with what the histories record of the Macedonian, and Ibn Kathīr placed the Dhū al-Qarnayn of the Qurʾān in the time of Ibrāhīm.

As for the claim that the Qurʾān copied a Syriac legend, the legend makes its hero the Macedonian, and the Qurʾān makes its hero a believing servant whose description contradicts him. A borrower does not correct the very identity of the hero he borrows. And the question was put to the Prophet ﷺ by the Quraysh at the suggestion of the Jews of Madīnah, as Ibn Isḥāq reported, as a test of whether he was a prophet; the answer came by revelation, and it was received by those who had set the test. Whoever makes the Qurʾān the student of a Syriac sermon has to explain why it disagrees with its teacher on the one thing that the teacher was written to praise.
