The Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ

On: Sahabah, Sahaba, Companions of the Prophet, cursing the Sahabah, Shia and the Sahabah, Abu Bakr and Umar, adalat al-sahabah, justice of the Companions

Who the Companions are, their rank in the Book and the Sunnah, why the whole of the religion reached us through them, what the imams said of the one who reviles them, and the answers to the Rāfiḍah and to those who say that their justice must be examined man by man.

Part One

The creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah in summary

First Issue: The Word Ṣaḥābī and Who Is Counted a Companion

Ṣaḥābī (صَحَابِيّ) is from ṣuḥbah (صُحْبَة), keeping company. In the language a man is the ṣāḥib of another when he has kept company with him, whether for long or for a short time. The people of ḥadīth used it of the Prophet ﷺ in the widest sense the language allows, because of the honour of the one accompanied. So a Companion is one who met the Prophet ﷺ while believing in him and died a Muslim, whether his company was long or short, whether he narrated from him or not, and whether he fought with him or not. The blind man who met him is a Companion, though he did not see him. The one who met him as a disbeliever and believed only after his death is not. The one who believed and then apostatised and died upon it is not.

So three things make a Companion: the meeting, faith in him at the meeting, and death upon Islām. And they are of ranks. The ten who were promised Paradise, those who gave the pledge under the tree, the people of Badr, the first of the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār, and those who spent and fought before the conquest, are above those who came after. Allah said so in Sūrat al-Ḥadīd: “Not equal among you are those who spent before the conquest and fought. Those are greater in degree than those who spent afterwards and fought. And to all Allah has promised the best.” The last sentence is the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah in them: they are of ranks, and all of them were promised the best.

Part Two

The texts of the Qurʾān and the Sunnah

Second Issue: The Companions in the Book of Allah

Allah named the first of them and those who followed them, and He declared that He is pleased with them, before the end of their lives and before they were tested by what came after.

Allah, the Exalted, said in Sūrat al-Tawbah:

And the first forerunners among the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār, and those who followed them in excellence: Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein forever. That is the great success.

Sūrat al-Tawbah, 9:100 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)

Allah does not declare that He is pleased with a people whom He knows will become disbelievers. His pleasure is from His knowledge of how they will end. And He made those who come after them followers of them “in excellence”, so that the way to His pleasure after them is to follow them, not to examine them.

And He said of those who gave the pledge under the tree:

Allah was certainly pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with a near victory.

Sūrat al-Fatḥ, 48:18 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)

They were more than fourteen hundred men. “He knew what was in their hearts.” Whoever claims that their hearts held hypocrisy or that they would turn on their heels has contradicted the One who knew what was in their hearts.

And He described them at the end of the same sūrah:

Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those with him are severe against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating, seeking bounty from Allah and pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. That is their description in the Torah, and their description in the Gospel is as a plant that puts out its shoot and strengthens it, so it grows firm and stands upon its stalk, delighting the sowers, so that He may enrage the disbelievers through them. Allah has promised those of them who believe and do righteous deeds forgiveness and a great reward.

Sūrat al-Fatḥ, 48:29 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)

“To enrage the disbelievers through them.” Mālik took from this verse that whoever is enraged by the Companions has a share in what it describes. And Sūrat al-Ḥashr gives the third class after the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār, those who come after them, and teaches them what they are to say.

He said in Sūrat al-Ḥashr:

And those who came after them say: Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and put not in our hearts any rancour toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.

Sūrat al-Ḥashr, 59:10 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)

Third Issue: The Companions in the Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ

The Prophet ﷺ ranked the generations, and he put his own first.

Al-Bukhārī reported in his Ṣaḥīḥ from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd that the Prophet ﷺ said:

The best of people are my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them. Then there will come people whose testimony races ahead of their oath, and whose oath races ahead of their testimony.

And he forbade reviling them, and he measured the gap between them and everyone after them.

Al-Bukhārī reported in his Ṣaḥīḥ from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī that the Prophet ﷺ said:

Do not revile my Companions. For if one of you were to spend the like of Uḥud in gold, it would not reach the mudd of one of them, nor half of it.

He said this to Khālid ibn al-Walīd, who was himself a Companion, about ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf, who had become Muslim before him. If a later Companion who spent a mountain of gold would not reach the handful of an earlier one, then what is the place of a man in our time who sits in judgement on them?

Part Three

The statements of the Salaf

Fourth Issue: The Imams on the One Who Reviles Them

Abū Zurʿah al-Rāzī, one of the two imams of Rayy whose creed opens the chapter on the Highness, gave the reason why reviling them is not a matter of history.

Al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī reported in al-Kifāyah, with his chain to Abū Zurʿah:

When you see a man disparaging any one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, know that he is a zindīq. That is because the Messenger ﷺ is true in our view, and the Qurʾān is true, and it was only the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who conveyed this Qurʾān and the Sunan to us. They only want to discredit our witnesses so as to annul the Book and the Sunnah, and discrediting them is more fitting, and they are zanādiqah.

That is the heart of the matter. Every verse of the Qurʾān and every ḥadīth reached the Ummah through these men. A man who says that they were liars, or apostates, or traitors, has not attacked a few individuals of the past. He has attacked the chain by which he received his religion, and he has to give an account of where his Qurʾān came from.

Part Four

The claims of the opponents and their refutation

“They apostatised after the Prophet ﷺ except a few”

The claim

Said by the Rāfiḍah, and recorded in their own books of ḥadīth

After the death of the Prophet ﷺ the Companions apostatised, except three or a handful, because they gave the caliphate to Abū Bakr and not to ʿAlī.

Its origin ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sabaʾ and the Rāfiḍah after him.

The response

First, the Book. Allah said that He was pleased with the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār and those who gave the pledge under the tree, that He knew what was in their hearts, and that He promised them Paradise. The Rāfiḍī has to say that Allah did not know how they would end, or that He knew and was pleased with them anyway. Either is disbelief.

Secondly, the transmission. The Qurʾān that the Rāfiḍī recites was gathered by Abū Bakr and copied by ʿUthmān, and it reached him through the very men he calls apostates. If they were apostates who betrayed the Prophet ﷺ in the matter of the caliphate, nothing stops them from betraying him in the matter of the Book. That is why some of their scholars said that the Qurʾān was altered, and why the imams said, as Abū Zurʿah did, that the attack on the Companions is an attack on the Book.

Thirdly, ʿAlī himself. He gave the pledge to Abū Bakr, ʿUmar and ʿUthmān, he prayed behind them, he married his daughter Umm Kulthūm to ʿUmar, and he named his sons Abū Bakr, ʿUmar and ʿUthmān. He said from the pulpit of Kūfah, as al-Bukhārī reports through his son Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah, that the best of this Ummah after its Prophet ﷺ is Abū Bakr and then ʿUmar. The Rāfiḍī who claims to follow ʿAlī has to make ʿAlī a coward or a hypocrite to keep his doctrine.

Fourthly, the outcome. A religion whose Prophet ﷺ spent twenty-three years and left behind no more than three or four believers is a failed religion, and the Rāfiḍī has said of the Messenger ﷺ what no enemy of Islam could say better. Allah said: “You are the best nation brought forth for mankind.” The first to hear that address were the Companions.

“Their justice must be examined man by man, as with every narrator”

The claim

Said by the Muʿtazilah of old, and by some modern writers on ḥadīth

The Companions were men like others. Some of them fought one another, some sinned, and some were hypocrites. So their reports should be examined like those of any other narrator, and no one should be accepted merely for being a Companion.

The response

Ahl al-Sunnah do not say that the Companions were free of sin. They say that they are all trustworthy (ʿudūl) in what they report from the Prophet ﷺ, because Allah and His Messenger ﷺ declared it of them, and because no one of them is known to have lied against him. The hypocrites were known by name to the Prophet ﷺ and by their deeds to the Companions, and they are not counted Companions, for the definition of a Companion requires faith.

The fighting between them was a difference of judgement among men each of whom sought the truth. The Prophet ﷺ said of al-Ḥasan that Allah would make peace through him between two great parties of the Muslims, and called both of them Muslims. Ahl al-Sunnah hold their tongues about what happened between them, say that each was either right with two rewards or mistaken with one, and say with Sūrat al-Ḥashr: our Lord, put no rancour in our hearts toward those who believed.

And the man who wants to examine them one by one has nothing to examine them with. Every report about their conduct reached him through them or through those who learned from them. He weighs them by the scales they handed to him. The critics of ḥadīth examined everyone after them with the greatest strictness, and they did not examine the Companions, because Allah had already examined them.

“Abū Hurayrah narrated too much, and the Companions doubted him”

The claim

Said by the Rāfiḍah, by the orientalists after them, and by those who reject the Sunnah

Abū Hurayrah accompanied the Prophet ﷺ for about three years, yet he narrated more than Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān and ʿAlī together. The Companions themselves objected to how much he narrated. So his reports are to be doubted, and with them a large part of the Sunnah.

The response

This objection is not new. It was raised in the lifetime of Abū Hurayrah (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu), and he answered it himself, before the Companions, in words that al-Bukhārī recorded in his Ṣaḥīḥ.

Al-Bukhārī reported from al-Aʿraj that Abū Hurayrah said:

They say: Abū Hurayrah narrates a great deal. And Allah is the appointed meeting. And they say: Why do the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār not narrate the like of his narrations? My brothers from the Muhājirūn were occupied with trading in the markets, and my brothers from the Anṣār were occupied with working their properties, and I was a poor man who kept close to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the filling of my stomach. So I was present when they were absent, and I retained when they forgot. And the Prophet ﷺ said one day: “None of you will spread out his garment until I finish this speech of mine, then gather it to his chest, and then forget anything of what I said, ever.” So I spread out a striped cloak, having no garment other than it, until the Prophet ﷺ finished his speech, then I gathered it to my chest. By the One who sent him with the truth, I have not forgotten anything of that speech of his to this day of mine. And by Allah, were it not for two verses in the Book of Allah, I would never have narrated anything to you: {Indeed, those who conceal what We sent down of clear proofs and guidance…}.

So he gave three reasons, and each is a matter of the record of the Companions. The first is that he kept to the Prophet ﷺ at every hour while the others had their trades and their palm groves. The second is the supplication of the Prophet ﷺ for his memory. The third is that he feared to conceal knowledge. And the Prophet ﷺ himself bore witness to his eagerness for ḥadīth.

Al-Bukhārī reported in the Book of Knowledge from Abū Hurayrah:

It was said: O Messenger of Allah, who will be the happiest of people with your intercession on the Day of Resurrection? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I thought, O Abū Hurayrah, that no one would ask me about this ḥadīth before you, because of what I have seen of your eagerness for ḥadīth. The happiest of people with my intercession on the Day of Resurrection is whoever says lā ilāhah illā Allāh sincerely from his heart, or his soul.”

As for the claim that the Companions doubted him, the report on which it is built is the report of Ibn ʿUmar, and when it is read in full it is a testimony for Abū Hurayrah and not against him. Al-Bayhaqī gave it with its chain and graded it.

Al-Bayhaqī reported in al-Madkhal ilā al-Sunan al-Kubrā, by his chain to Ibn ʿUmar:

He passed by Abū Hurayrah while he was narrating that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever follows a funeral and prays over it has a qīrāṭ, and if he attends its burial he has two qīrāṭs, and the qīrāṭ is greater than Uḥud.” Ibn ʿUmar said to him: O Abū Hurayrah, look at what you narrate from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So Abū Hurayrah stood up to him and took him by the hand until he went with him to ʿĀʾishah, and Abū Hurayrah said to her: I adjure you by Allah, did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Whoever follows a funeral and prays over it has a qīrāṭ, and if he attends its burial he has two qīrāṭs, and the qīrāṭ is greater than Uḥud”? She said: By Allah, yes. Then Abū Hurayrah said: The planting of young palms did not occupy me from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, nor trading in the markets. I only sought from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a word that he would teach me or a morsel that he would feed me. So Ibn ʿUmar said: O Abū Hurayrah, you kept closest of us to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and you are the most knowledgeable of us of his ḥadīth.

al-Bayhaqī, al-Madkhal ilā al-Sunan al-Kubrā no. 431 (1/208–209); he said: “This chain is authentic.”

As for the comparison with Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān and ʿAlī, they were occupied with the caliphate and its burdens and died before the people needed their narration as they needed it later, while Abū Hurayrah lived until the year fifty-seven or after it, sat in the mosque of Madīnah for decades, gave verdicts, and was asked by the Followers who came from every land. The count of his reports that is quoted against him includes every route and every repetition. And al-Bukhārī said that around eight hundred men of knowledge narrated from him, among them Companions and the senior Followers. Whoever doubts him has doubted all of them, and has doubted the Companions who heard him narrate in their midst and did not deny him. That is the purpose of those who raise it: as Abū Zurʿah said, they wish to impugn our witnesses in order to abolish the Book and the Sunnah.

“There were hypocrites among the Companions, so any one of them could be a hypocrite”

The claim

Said by the Rāfiḍah, whose books report that the people apostatised after the Prophet ﷺ except three, and taken up by those who attack the transmitters of the Sunnah

Allah said: “And among the Bedouins around you are hypocrites, and among the people of Madīnah; they have persisted in hypocrisy. You do not know them; We know them” (al-Tawbah 101). And the Prophet ﷺ said: “Among my companions are twelve hypocrites.” So the hypocrites were mixed among the Companions and unknown, and no report of a Companion can be trusted until his sincerity is established.

The response

The verse itself answers them. In the verse before it Allah said: “And the foremost, the first of the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār, and those who followed them with excellence, Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow” (al-Tawbah 100). So He separated the two groups in one place: those with whom He declared His pleasure, and the hypocrites among the Bedouins and the people of Madīnah. Whoever takes the second verse and uses it against the people of the first has reversed the order of the Book.

And hypocrisy had a known place. The Muhājirūn left their homes and wealth in Makkah when the disbelievers held it, and no one does that while hiding disbelief, for there was nothing to be gained by a false faith. Hypocrisy appeared in Madīnah, when Islām had strength and men needed to show it. Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (raḥimahullāh) reported this from Imām Aḥmad.

Ibn Taymiyyah said in Kitāb al-Īmān:

The people became three kinds: either a believer, or a disbeliever who shows his disbelief, or a hypocrite; unlike how they were while he was in Makkah, for there was no hypocrite there. That is why Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal and others said: There was no hypocrite among the Muhājirūn; hypocrisy was only among the tribes of the Anṣār. For Makkah was under the control of the disbelievers, so no one believed and emigrated except one who was a believer; there was nothing there calling to hypocrisy. And in Madīnah the people of strength believed, so the believers had might and protection there through the Anṣār, and whoever did not show faith, they harmed him.

As for the ḥadīth of the twelve, Muslim reported it from ʿAmmār from Ḥudhayfah, and in the second narration in the same place the wording is “in my Ummah”. So “my companions” there means those who were counted among his followers outwardly, as the Arab says “my companions” of those who are around him. The Companion in the language of the scholars is the one who met the Prophet ﷺ as a believer and died upon that, and the hypocrite is not a believer, so he was never a Companion in that sense. The ḥadīth itself is a proof against the objector, for it gives a number: twelve, known to Ḥudhayfah by name, who were destroyed as the ḥadīth describes.

Muslim reported in his Ṣaḥīḥ from Qays:

I said to ʿAmmār: This that you have done in the matter of ʿAlī, was it an opinion you held, or something that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted to you? He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not entrust anything to us that he did not entrust to the people at large. But Ḥudhayfah informed me that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Among my companions are twelve hypocrites. Eight of them will not enter Paradise until the camel passes through the eye of the needle. Eight of them, the dubaylah (a fiery ulcer) will suffice you against them”, and four: I did not retain what Shuʿbah said about them.

Muslim, al-Ṣaḥīḥ no. 2779 (ed. ʿAbd al-Bāqī 4/2143)

Source, chain and authenticity

Authentic. It is in the Ṣaḥīḥ of Muslim, and the ummah received the two Ṣaḥīḥs with acceptance; its full chain is given in the Arabic above.

Hence, the hypocrites were a small, known number, whom the Prophet ﷺ named to Ḥudhayfah, and from whom no one took the religion. Not one ḥadīth of the Sunnah is transmitted by a man known to the scholars as a hypocrite. The transmitters of the Sunnah were the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār whom Allah praised by name, the people of Badr, the people of the Pledge under the Tree of whom Allah said “Allah was pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree”, and those who followed them. And the Prophet ﷺ said: “None of the people of the Tree who pledged allegiance beneath it will enter the Fire, if Allah wills”, as Muslim reported from Umm Mubashshir. So whoever makes the hidden hypocrite a reason to doubt the Companions has doubted the testimony of Allah and His Messenger for them, in order to reach the Book and the Sunnah that came through them.

“Ahl al-Sunnah love Yazīd, the killer of al-Ḥusayn”

The claim

Said by the Rāfiḍah, who also make the mourning of al-Ḥusayn a ritual of their religion

The Sunnīs defend Banū Umayyah, and they do not curse Yazīd, who killed al-Ḥusayn, the grandson of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. This shows that they hate the Household and love its enemies.

The response

Ahl al-Sunnah love al-Ḥusayn (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu) as a member of the Household and as one of the two masters of the youth of Paradise, and they hold that he was killed unjustly and that his killers are among the worst of creation. As for Yazīd, they neither love him with the love due to the righteous nor curse him by name. Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (raḥimahullāh) set out the two extremes and the position of the imams between them.

Ibn Taymiyyah said, in Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā:

This extremism concerning Yazīd from both sides opposes what the people of knowledge and faith agreed upon. For Yazīd ibn Muʿāwiyah was born in the caliphate of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu); he did not meet the Prophet ﷺ and was not one of the Companions, by the agreement of the scholars. Nor was he among those known for religion and righteousness; he was one of the young men of the Muslims. Nor was he a disbeliever or a zindīq. He took office after his father with the dislike of some of the Muslims and the approval of others, and he had courage and generosity, and he did not openly commit the obscenities that his enemies relate of him. In his rule great events took place. The first of them was the killing of al-Ḥusayn (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu). He did not order the killing of al-Ḥusayn, nor did he show joy at his killing, nor did he strike his front teeth with a rod, nor was the head of al-Ḥusayn carried to Syria. But he ordered that al-Ḥusayn be prevented and repelled from the matter of rule, even if by fighting him. The deputies went beyond his order, and Shamir ibn Dhī al-Jawshan urged ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Ziyād to kill him, and ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Ziyād transgressed against him. Al-Ḥusayn asked them that he be allowed to go to Yazīd, or to go to the frontier as a garrison soldier, or to return to Makkah. They refused him unless he surrendered himself to them as a captive, and he ordered ʿUmar ibn Saʿd to fight him, and they killed him unjustly, him and a group of his Household. His killing was among the great calamities, for the killing of al-Ḥusayn, and the killing of ʿUthmān before him, were among the greatest causes of the trials in this Ummah, and their killers are among the worst of creation before Allah. When his family came to Yazīd ibn Muʿāwiyah, he honoured them and sent them to Madīnah, and it is reported from him that he cursed Ibn Ziyād for killing him and said: I would have been content with the obedience of the people of Iraq without the killing of al-Ḥusayn. But with this, he did not show any rejection of his killing, nor did he support him or take retribution for him, which was what was obligatory upon him. So the people of truth blame him for abandoning what was obligatory, in addition to other matters. As for his enemies, they add lies against him.

Then he mentioned what Yazīd’s army did to the people of Madīnah at al-Ḥarrah and the siege of Makkah, and called it transgression and oppression done by his order, and he gave the position of Imām Aḥmad.

He said:

For this reason the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah and the imams of the Ummah is that he is not reviled and not loved. Ṣāliḥ ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said: I said to my father: Some people say that they love Yazīd. He said: My son, does anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day love Yazīd? I said: Father, then why do you not curse him? He said: My son, when have you seen your father curse anyone? And it is reported from him that he was asked: Do you write ḥadīth from Yazīd ibn Muʿāwiyah? He said: No, nor any honour; is he not the one who did to the people of Madīnah what he did? So Yazīd, according to the scholars of the imams of the Muslims, is a king among the kings. They do not love him with the love of the righteous and the awliyāʾ of Allah, and they do not revile him, for they do not like the cursing of a specific Muslim.

Hence, the charge is false on both of its counts. Ahl al-Sunnah do not love Yazīd, and Aḥmad refused even to narrate from him. And they do not make the curse of a specific Muslim a part of their religion, because the Prophet ﷺ forbade the cursing of the man who was repeatedly brought to him for drinking wine, saying that he loves Allah and His Messenger, as al-Bukhārī reported. The Rāfiḍah, who make cursing the foundation of their religion, curse Abū Bakr, ʿUmar and the wives of the Prophet ﷺ, and they have no standing to judge others by their love for the Household.

And the record of the killing of al-Ḥusayn is against them, not against Ahl al-Sunnah. It was the people of Kūfah who wrote to him and called him, then abandoned his envoy Muslim ibn ʿAqīl to be killed, then gave him up at Karbalāʾ. The Companions who were alive, Ibn ʿAbbās, Ibn ʿUmar and others, counselled him not to go to them, knowing what they had done to his father and his brother. Those who claim his blood today descend in their doctrine from those who called him and betrayed him, and the Sunnah is that the Muslim says at the calamity: “Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return”, and does not strike his cheeks or tear his garments, for the Prophet ﷺ said: “He is not of us who strikes his cheeks, tears his garments and calls with the call of the Jāhiliyyah”, as al-Bukhārī and Muslim reported.
