The Two Meanings of al-Ẓāhir: The Apparent Sense of the Texts of the Attributes

The word ẓāhir carries two senses. In one sense it means a meaning modelled on created things, which the Salaf rejected as tashbīh. In the other it means the meaning the words convey as befits Allah, which the Salaf affirmed. Ibn Taymiyyah, al-Dhahabī and the early imams draw the same distinction, and it settles the dispute over whether the texts of the attributes are taken “on their apparent meaning”. The second part answers the claim that affirming the apparent meaning is tashbīh.

Part One

The creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah in summary

First Issue: The Word Ẓāhir in Language and in the Sharīʿah

Ẓāhir is the active participle of ẓaharah: to become evident, to come out into the open. Its root also carries the meaning of being above: the back of a thing is its ẓahr, and the Arabs say ẓaharah ʿalā al-ḥāʾiṭ when someone climbs to the top of a wall. Among the Names of Allah is al-Ẓāhir, and the Prophet ﷺ explained it in his supplication: “You are al-Ẓāhir, and there is nothing above You.” He explained the Name with the meaning of Highness.

In the usage of the scholars, the ẓāhir of a text is the meaning that comes first to the mind of one who knows the language when he hears it, before any interpretation. The Salaf said that the texts of the attributes are to be taken according to their ẓāhir. They meant the meaning that befits Allah, which the Arab understands from the words, without likening Him to creatures. The later mutakallimūn turned the word around: they claimed that the ẓāhir of the texts is likening, and then said the ẓāhir is not intended. They put their own error into the word, and then blamed the texts for it.

Part Two

The texts of the Qurʾān and the Sunnah

Second Issue: Ibn Taymiyyah: Six Positions on the Texts of the Attributes

Ibn Taymiyyah divides the possible positions on the verses and ḥadīths of the attributes into six. Of those who take them on their apparent meaning, one group makes that meaning of the genus of creatures' attributes — the mushabbihah, whom the Salaf refuted. The other takes them on their apparent meaning befitting the majesty of Allah, exactly as the names al-ʿAlīm, al-Qadīr and al-Rabb are taken on their apparent meaning befitting Him.

Ibn Taymiyyah said in Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā:

The sum of the matter is that the possible positions on the verses and ḥadīths of the attributes are six, each held by a group of the people of the qiblah. Two say: they run according to their apparent meaning (ẓāhir); two say: they are contrary to their apparent meaning; and two remain silent. As for the first, they are two groups. (1) One runs them on their apparent meaning but makes that apparent meaning of the genus of creatures' attributes: these are the mushabbihah; their position is false, the Salaf rejected it, and the refutation is directed at them. (2) The second runs them on their apparent meaning befitting the majesty of Allah — just as one runs the apparent meaning of the names al-ʿAlīm, al-Qadīr, al-Rabb, al-Ilāh, al-Mawjūd, al-Dhāt and the like on their apparent meaning befitting the majesty of Allah …

Part Three

The statements of the Salaf

Third Issue: No One Among the Salaf Said the Apparent Meaning Is Not Intended

In Bayān Talbīs al-Jahmiyyah he adds that not one of the Salaf said that Allah's intent in these texts is something other than their apparent meaning, let alone that one must be certain of it. The word ẓāhir is ambiguous: if it means what resembles creatures' attributes, the Salaf negated it, as the Book negates it with “There is nothing like Him”.

Ibn Taymiyyah said in Bayān Talbīs al-Jahmiyyah:

Nor is it known from any of the Salaf that he said that what Allah, Exalted is He, intends by them is other than their apparent meaning — let alone that he said it is obligatory to be certain of that. Rather, the word 'ẓāhir' is ambiguous (mujmal): by 'the apparent meaning' may be meant what resembles the attributes of creatures, and this is what the Salaf negated, as the Book indicates — and reason likewise. He said, Exalted is He: {There is nothing like Him} [42:11]; {And there is none comparable to Him} [112:4]; {Do you know of any namesake of His?} [19:65]. So whoever says that when He rose over the Throne it was like the rising of a king, such that He would be in need of the Throne — this is a reprehensible likening (tamthīl).

Fourth Issue: The Early Imams: What Tashbīh Is

Isḥāq ibn Rāhawayh defined tashbīh precisely: it is to say “a hand like my hand” or “hearing like my hearing”. Whoever affirms the hand, hearing and sight that Allah affirmed, without asking how and without saying “like”, has not likened Him. Al-Tirmidhī records that the people of knowledge affirmed the hand, hearing and sight, while the Jahmiyyah explained these verses otherwise and said that the hand means power.

Al-Tirmidhī said in al-Jāmiʿ:

Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm said: Tashbīh is only when one says 'a hand like a hand' or 'similar to a hand', or 'hearing like hearing' or 'similar to hearing'; if he says 'hearing like hearing' or 'similar to hearing', that is tashbīh. But if he says as Allah, Exalted is He, said — hand, hearing, seeing — and does not say 'how', nor 'similar to hearing' or 'like hearing', then this is not tashbīh; it is as Allah, Exalted is He, said in His Book: 'There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.'

More than one of the people of knowledge said about this hadith and similar reports concerning the attributes, and the descent of the Lord, Blessed and Exalted, every night to the lowest heaven: The reports on this are established; they are believed in, not imagined, and it is not said 'how?'. Thus it is reported from Mālik, Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah and ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak that they said about these hadiths: 'Pass them on without how.' This is the position of the people of knowledge of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah. As for the Jahmiyyah, they rejected these reports and said: this is tashbīh. Allah has mentioned in more than one place in His Book the hand, hearing and seeing; the Jahmiyyah interpreted these verses and explained them (fassarūhā) other than as the people of knowledge explained them, and said: Allah did not create Ādam with His hand, and said: the meaning of 'hand' here is power.

Part Four

The imams after them

Fifth Issue: Al-Dhahabī: “the apparent meaning has today become two”

Al-Dhahabī states the same in the Siyar. The true apparent meaning is to say that Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, that He created Ādam with His hand and spoke to Mūsā directly, to pass these on as they came, understanding from them what the speech indicates as befits Him, without claiming a contrary taʾwīl. The false apparent meaning is to measure the unseen by the seen and liken the Creator to His creation.

Al-Dhahabī said in Siyar Aʿlām al-Nubalāʾ:

I say: 'the apparent meaning' (al-ẓāhir) has today become two apparent meanings, one true and the other false. The true one is to say: He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, Willing, Speaking, Living, All-Knowing; everything perishes except His Face; He created Ādam with His hand, spoke to Mūsā directly, and took Ibrāhīm as an intimate friend, and the like. We pass it on as it came, and we understand from it what the speech indicates, as befits Him, Exalted is He, and we do not say it has a taʾwīl contrary to that. The other apparent meaning — the false one, misguidance — is to believe that the unseen is to be measured by the seen and to liken the Creator to His creation, exalted is Allah above that. Rather His attributes are like His essence: He has no equal, no opposite, no peer, no like and no resemblance; 'there is nothing like Him', neither in His essence nor in His attributes. In this the jurist and the layman are alike. And Allah knows best.

Part Five

Principles drawn from the evidence

Sixth Issue: The Rule of the Ẓāhir

Whoever says the ẓāhir of the texts is not intended has to be asked which ẓāhir he means. If he means that the attributes of Allah are like the attributes of creatures, then this is not the ẓāhir of the texts at all, because the texts themselves deny it: “There is nothing like Him.” If he means that Allah has no Hand, no Face and no Highness, then he has denied the meaning that the Arabs understood when the Qurʾān was revealed. There is no third meaning between these two that he can claim for himself.

Part Six

The claims of the opponents and their refutation

“Affirming the apparent meaning is tashbīh”

The claim

Taking the texts of the attributes on their apparent meaning is likening Allah to creation.

The response

The claim holds only for the first sense of “apparent”, the meaning modelled on creatures, which Ahl al-Sunnah reject. In the second sense — what the words convey as befits Allah — the apparent meaning is the truth, exactly as with the names al-ʿAlīm and al-Qadīr, which no one calls tashbīh. Isḥāq's definition settles it: tashbīh is to say “like my hand”; affirming the Hand Allah affirmed, without “how” and without “like”, is not tashbīh.

Al-Radd

Al-Radd said in p.:

So he [Jahm] built the foundation of his doctrine on these verses, interpreted the Qurʾān otherwise than its interpretation, belied the ḥadīths of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and claimed that whoever describes Allah with anything with which He described Himself in His Book, or which His Messenger narrated of Him, is a disbeliever and is one of the mushabbihah.

al-Radd, p. 97. Also Bayān Talbīs 3/455.

Source, chain and authenticity

'These verses' are the verses Jahm relied on, quoted just before (al-Shūrā 11, al-Anʿām 3 and 103), as given in the editor's footnote ¹. The editor's footnote ² (on ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd) and the scan's footnotes on Darʾ 2/414–415 are the editor's.

Stated as an argument: Aḥmad reports that Jahm called anyone who describes Allah by the Qurʾān's and Sunnah's descriptions a mushabbih . Al-Tirmidhī reports that the Jahmiyyah said 'this is tashbīh' of the attribute-reports, while Mālik, Ibn ʿUyaynah, Ibn al-Mubārak and 'the people of knowledge of Ahl al-Sunnah' said 'pass them on without how' . The Jawhara's premise that some texts 'suggest tashbīh' (awhama al-tashbīh) is therefore the premise the early sources attribute to the Jahmiyyah, not to the Salaf. The Atharī reply is that the Salaf's 'without how' left no room for treating the text itself as a source of tashbīh. Present both readings.

More than one of the people of knowledge have said about this ḥadīth, and the reports like it concerning the attributes and the descent of the Lord, blessed and exalted, every night to the lowest heaven: They said: The reports about this are established; they are believed in, without imagining (wa-lā yutawahham), and it is not said: How? This is what was narrated from Mālik, Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah and ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak, that they said of these ḥadīths: Pass them on without how. And such is the position of the people of knowledge of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah. As for the Jahmiyyah, they rejected these reports and said: This is tashbīh. And Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has mentioned in more than one place in His Book the hand, hearing and seeing, and the Jahmiyyah interpreted these verses and explained them otherwise than the people of knowledge explained them, and said: Allah did not create Ādam with His hand! And they said: The meaning of 'hand' here is power. And Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm said: Tashbīh is only when one says 'a hand like [my] hand' or 'similar to [my] hand', 'hearing like [my] hearing' or 'similar to [my] hearing'; if one says 'hearing like [my] hearing' or 'similar to [my] hearing', that is tashbīh. But if one says, as Allah the Exalted said, 'hand, hearing, seeing', and does not say 'how', nor say 'similar to [my] hearing' or 'like [my] hearing', this is not tashbīh; it is as Allah the Exalted said in His Book: 'There is nothing like Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing' [al-Shūrā 11].

Al-Tirmidhī is the strongest single witness for this post. A ḥadīth master of the third century reports three things: (1) the Salaf's method ('believed in, not imagined, no how'); (2) the Jahmiyyah's charge 'this is tashbīh' and their reading of 'hand' as 'power'; (3) Isḥāq's precise definition of tashbīh as 'a hand like a hand'. Point (3) answers the Jawhara's 'awhama al-tashbīh' directly: on Isḥāq's definition the text itself never implies tashbīh, only the comparison added by the reader does.

Rejecting Authentic Ḥadīths: The Ashʿarīs, the Muʿtazilah and the Salaf Compared

Sourced (OP14, OP15). Al-Rāzī states in his own Tafsīr that āḥād reports 'do not yield certainty' in non-practical matters, and that when a single report conflicts with 'decisive proofs' the decisive proofs prevail. In Asās al-Taqdīs he goes further: a report describing Allah with what he judges objectionable is to be declared a fabrication even if in al-Bukhārī and Muslim.

Al-Rāzī, Taʾsīs al-Taqdīs (Ed. al-Sharfāwī and al-Khaṭīb)

Al-Rāzī said in Taʾsīs al-Taqdīs:

Third: it is well known among the Ummah that a group of heretics (malāḥidah) fabricated objectionable reports and contrived to pass them off on the ḥadīth scholars; and because of the soundness and guilelessness of those scholars' hearts they did not recognise them, but accepted them. And what objection is greater than describing Allah, the Exalted, with what impugns His divinity and invalidates His lordship? So it is obligatory to decide with certainty, regarding reports of this kind, that they are fabricated. As for al-Bukhārī and al-Qushayrī [Muslim], they did not know the unseen; rather they strove and took precautions to the extent of their ability. As for believing that they knew all the circumstances that occurred from the time of the Messenger ﷺ to our time, no rational person says that. The most that can be said is that we think well of them and of those from whom they narrated; but when we see a report containing something objectionable that cannot be attributed to the Messenger ﷺ, we decide with certainty that it is one of the fabrications of the heretics and one of what they passed off on those ḥadīth scholars.

Al-Qāḍī ʿAbd al-Jabbār (as Transmitted in Mānkdīm's Recension), Sharḥ al-Uṣūl al-Khamsah, Vol.

Al-Qāḍī ʿAbd al-Jabbār (as transmitted in Mānkdīm's recension) said in Sharḥ al-Uṣūl al-Khamsah, vol.:

As for what is known to be false by inference: like the reports of the Mujbira and the Mushabbihah about their corrupt doctrines, which contain compulsion, likening, corporealism and other errors. As for what is known to be neither true nor false: it is like the solitary reports. What is of this kind may be acted upon if it comes with its conditions; but as for accepting it in matters whose path is belief, no. On this point too there is disagreement: some people allow that worship may be imposed by a single report, and some deny that this is established. [… a paragraph arguing that acting on solitary reports is permissible, on the analogy of the judge who rules on two witnesses …] What proves that worship by it is established is consensus. And here is another principle: reports of this kind must be examined. If it is something whose path is action, it is acted upon when it comes with its conditions; if it is something whose path is belief, it is examined: if it agrees with the proofs of reason, it is accepted and what it entails is believed, not because of it but because of the rational proof; and if it does not agree with them, it must be rejected and judged that the Prophet did not say it, and if he did say it, he only said it by way of relating it from someone else. This is when it does not admit of interpretation except with forcing; if it does admit of it, it must be interpreted. The detail of this belongs to uṣūl al-fiqh.

al-Qāḍī ʿAbd al-Jabbār (as transmitted in Mānkdīm's recension), Sharḥ al-Uṣūl al-Khamsah, vol. 1 pp. In the common printed edition (ed. ʿAbd al-Karīm ʿUthmān, Maktabat Wahba) the passage is at pp. 768–770

Source, chain and authenticity

The quotation in Majallat al-Buḥūth and the scan run 'fa-ammā qabūluhu fīmā ṭarīquhu al-iʿtiqādāt fa-lā, illā idhā kānah muwāfiqan…'. In the primary text these are two places: the denial of acceptance in beliefs (p. 521), then, after a discussion of whether worship by a single report is established, 'wa-hāhunā aṣl ākhar…' with the rule on agreement with reason (p. 522). The doctrine is unchanged; the joining is the quoter's. Edition note: the published Sharḥ al-Uṣūl al-Khamsah is the commentary of Mānkdīm Shashdīw (d. 425) on ʿAbd al-Jabbār's work (as the opening 'Qāḍī al-Quḍāt … began' shows); cite it as such.

Restated precisely: al-Rāzī's criterion for rejecting a report is its content as judged by his theology, not a defect in its chain. Ḥadīth criticism exists to judge chains and texts by transmission. A rule that rejects authenticated reports because of prior doctrine makes the doctrine immune to the Sunnah. The parallel with ʿAbd al-Jabbār shows the rule's Muʿtazilī precedent.

Al-Tirmidhī, al-Jāmiʿ, Ed. Bashshār

Al-Tirmidhī said in al-Jāmiʿ, ed. Bashshār:

Al-Lālakāʾī, Sharḥ Uṣūl Iʿtiqād

Al-Lālakāʾī said in Sharḥ Uṣūl Iʿtiqād:

[Baqiyyah said:] al-Awzāʿī said to me: O Abū Muḥammad, what do you say of a people who hate the ḥadīth of their Prophet? I said: An evil people. He said: There is no innovator to whom you narrate from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ something contrary to his innovation, but he comes to hate the ḥadīth.

al-Lālakāʾī, Sharḥ Uṣūl Iʿtiqād 3/477; al-Khaṭīb, Sharaf Aṣḥāb al-Ḥadīth p. 73 (13125/193); al-Aṣbahānī, al-Ḥujjah 1/207. Chain (al-Lālakāʾī / al-Khaṭīb): … Muḥammad ibn Hārūn ibn Ḥumayd ← Abū Hammām ← Baqiyyah ← al-Awzāʿī.

Al-Lālakāʾī has 'Yā Abā Muḥammad', al-Khaṭīb 'Yā Abā Yuḥmid' (both are Baqiyyah's kunya variants). Baqiyyah ibn al-Walīd is known for tadlīs, but here he reports a direct conversation ('qālah lī').
