Part One
The creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah in summary
First Issue: The Words Makān and Jihah in Language
Makān in language is the place in which a thing is, that which contains it and surrounds it. Jihah comes from wajh: it is the side towards which one turns one's face. Neither word is used in the texts as a description of Allah. What the texts use is the Highness, the being above, the Throne and the heaven.
Each word carries two meanings. If makān or jihah means a created place that encloses Allah, then Allah is free of it: there was Allah, and nothing else besides Him, and He then created the places. If the word means what is above the world, where there is no created thing at all, then this is only another expression for His Highness above His creation, and the meaning is true even though the word is not the word of the texts. So whoever denies the jihah and means by it the first meaning has spoken the truth, and whoever denies it and means by that that Allah is not above the Throne has denied the Qurʾān.
Part Two
The texts of the Qurʾān and the Sunnah
Second Issue: The Distinction Ibn Taymiyyah Draws
The statement “Allah is in a place” carries two meanings. If it means that something else encompasses Him or that He depends on something else, Allah is exalted above that. If it means what is above the world, where the Lord is, that is affirmed. Judging the word without asking what it means either denies a truth or affirms a falsehood.
Ibn Taymiyyah said in Minhāj al-Sunnah:
If it is said: “He is in a place,” in the sense of something else encompassing Him and His needing something else — then Allah is exalted above needing anything else, above being encompassed by anything else, and the like. But if by ‘place’ is meant what is above the world and what the Lord is above: it is said, [since there is nothing] but Creator and created, and the Creator is separate from the created, He is the Manifest (al-Ẓāhir) above whom there is nothing. And when [the speaker] says, “He, Glorified is He, is above His heavens, upon His Throne, separate from His creation,” this meaning is true, whether you call that a ‘place’ or do not call it so. And once the intent is known, the position of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah is what the Book and the Sunnah indicate and the Salaf of the Ummah agreed upon, and it is the position that accords with authentic transmission and clear reason.
Ibn Taymiyyah, Minhāj al-Sunnah 2/145.

Third Issue: The Natural Disposition (Fiṭrah)
Ibn Qutaybah observes that if those who deny Allah's Highness returned to the disposition on which they were created, they would know that Allah is the Most High, that hearts rise towards Him in supplication, and that hands are raised to Him. Al-Dārimī adds that Muslims and disbelievers alike agree that Allah is in the heaven, so that even children who have not reached puberty raise their hands to Him when something distresses them.
Ibn Qutaybah said in Taʾwīl Mukhtalif al-Ḥadīth:
If these people returned to their natural dispositions (fiṭar) and to the knowledge of the Creator, Glorified is He, upon which their constitution was formed, they would know that Allah, Exalted is He, is the High (al-ʿAliyy), the Most High (al-Aʿlā), and that He is in the elevated place (bi-l-makān al-rafīʿ); that hearts, at remembrance, rise toward Him, and hands are raised to Him in supplication; and from on high relief is hoped for, victory expected, and provision sent down.
Ibn Qutaybah, Taʾwīl Mukhtalif al-Ḥadīth p. 394; quoted by Ibn Taymiyyah, Bayān Talbīs 4/489 and Sharḥ Ḥadīth al-Nuzūl p. 59.

ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd al-Dārimī said in Naqḍ ʿalā al-Marīsī, ed. al-Shawāmī:
The word of the Muslims and the disbelievers has agreed that Allah is in the heaven, and they defined Him (ḥaddūhu) by that — except al-Marīsī the misguided and his companions — so much so that children who have not reached puberty know Him by that: when something distresses a child, he raises his hands to his Lord, calling upon Him in the heaven and not elsewhere. So everyone is more knowledgeable of Allah and of His place (makānih) than the Jahmiyyah.
ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd al-Dārimī, Naqḍ ʿalā al-Marīsī, ed. al-Shawāmī, p. 78 = ed. al-Almaʿī 1/228; quoted by Ibn Taymiyyah, Darʾ 2/59; also cited in the editor's footnote of al-Ashʿarī's al-Ibānah.

The statements of the Salaf
Fourth Issue: The Imams Who Stated It
Al-Harawī gave a chapter of his Forty Proofs of Tawḥīd the heading “Affirming the directions for Allah”, opening it with the ḥadīth of the just who will be on pulpits of light at the right of the Most Merciful — and both His hands are right. ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Maqdisī wrote that whoever denies that Allah is in the direction of highness, after the verses and ḥadīths, opposes the Book of Allah and denies the Sunnah of His Messenger, and he follows it with Mālik's statement that Allah is in the heaven.
Al-Harawī reported in al-Arbaʿūn fī Dalāʾil al-Tawḥīd:

ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Maqdisī said in al-Iqtiṣād fī al-Iʿtiqād:
On this question there are proofs from the Book and the Sunnah whose mention would lengthen the book. Whoever denies that Allah is in the direction of highness (fī jihat al-ʿuluww) after these verses and hadiths is opposing the Book of Allah and denying the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah. 11 — Mālik ibn Anas said: Allah is in the heaven, and His knowledge is in every place; no place is devoid of His knowledge.

Fifth Issue: The Imams Who Spoke of the Place of Allah
The word makān was used by imams of the Salaf, and they used it to state the Highness against the Jahmiyyah, not to put Allah inside anything created. Bishr ibn al-Sarī, whom al-Ḥumaydī called a Jahmī from whom it is not permitted to write, came to Ḥammād ibn Zayd with the ḥadīth of the Descent and a mocking question: does He go about from place to place? Ḥammād was silent, then answered: He is in His place, and He draws near to His creation however He wills. He affirmed the place and the nearness together, and refused the Jahmī the premise of his question, which was that the Descent of Allah is like the movement of a body from one spot to another.
Al-ʿUqaylī reported in al-Ḍuʿafāʾ al-Kabīr:
Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī al-Abbār narrated to us: ʿAwwām ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us, saying: al-Ḥumaydī said: Bishr ibn al-Sarī was a Jahmī; it is not permissible to write from him. Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad al-Firyābī narrated to us: Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Muqaddamī narrated to us: Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb narrated to us, saying: Bishr ibn al-Sarī asked Ḥammād ibn Zayd, saying: O Abū Ismāʿīl, the ḥadīth that has come, “that Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, descends to the lowest heaven”: does He go about from place to place? Ḥammād was silent, then said: He is in His place, and He draws near to His creation however He wills.

Ibn Baṭṭah stated the creed of the people of the Sunnah after refuting those who say Allah is in every place: our Lord is in the highest of places and the loftiest heights, risen over His Throne above His heavens, and His knowledge encompasses all of His creation. The place he affirmed is the highest, above everything, where there is no created thing, and the knowledge he affirmed is everywhere.
Ibn Baṭṭah said in al-Ibānah al-Kubrā:
But we say: our Lord, Exalted is He, is in the highest of places and the loftiest heights. He has risen over His Throne above His heavens, and His knowledge encompasses all His creation. He knows what is far as He knows what is near, and He knows what is hidden as He knows what is apparent, as He described Himself, Exalted is He, saying: {And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it, and there is no grain in the darknesses of the earth, and nothing moist or dry, but that it is in a clear Book}

Ḥarb al-Kirmānī, the student of Aḥmad and Isḥāq, recorded in his creed what the Jahmiyyah held and what the imams said of them: they claim that the Qurʾān is created, that Allah did not speak to Mūsā, that He is not seen, that no place is known for Allah, and that He has no Throne and no Kursī. Then he gave the judgement: disbelievers, zanādiqah, enemies of Allah; beware of them. The denial of a known place for Allah is listed among the doctrines for which the Jahmiyyah were judged, beside the createdness of the Qurʾān.
Ḥarb ibn Ismāʿīl al-Kirmānī said in Masāʾil Ḥarb:
And the Jahmiyyah, the enemies of Allah: they are those who claim that the Qurʾān is created, that Allah did not speak to Mūsā, that Allah does not speak and is not seen, that no place is known for Allah, and that Allah has no Throne and no Kursī — and much speech that I hate to relate. They are disbelievers, zanādiqah, enemies of Allah; so beware of them.

Sixth Issue: The Judgement of the Salaf on the Jahmiyyah
Al-Bukhārī opened Khalq Afʿāl al-ʿIbād with the words of the imams about the Jahmiyyah. Sallām ibn Abī Muṭīʿ said: the Jahmiyyah are disbelievers. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd said: Jahm is a disbeliever in Allah the Mighty. Wakīʿ said: the Jahmiyyah are disbelievers, al-Marīsī is a Jahmī, and whoever says the Qurʾān is created is a disbeliever in what was sent down upon Muḥammad ﷺ, to be asked to repent and otherwise executed.
Al-Bukhārī said in Khalq Afʿāl al-ʿIbād:
And Zuhayr al-Sijistānī said: I heard Sallām ibn Abī Muṭīʿ say: “The Jahmiyyah are disbelievers.” And ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd said: “Jahm is a disbeliever in Allah the Mighty.” And Wakīʿ said: “These Murjiʾah, the Jahmiyyah, have innovated — and the Jahmiyyah are disbelievers — and al-Marīsī is a Jahmī, and you know how they disbelieved. They said: knowledge suffices you; and this is disbelief. And the Murjiʾah say: faith is saying without action; and this is an innovation. Whoever says the Qurʾān is created is a disbeliever in what was sent down upon Muḥammad ﷺ: he is asked to repent, and otherwise his neck is struck.”

These are not the words of later polemicists. They are the judgements of the imams of the second and third centuries, transmitted by al-Bukhārī in his own book. The Salaf did not treat the denial of the attributes as a difference of opinion among Muslims. They treated it as the doctrine of a sect that had left the religion, and they judged the doctrine accordingly. This study keeps their words as they said them.

Seventh Issue: Jihah and Ḥayyiz: The Breakdown of Ibn Taymiyyah
Ibn Taymiyyah gave the method that cuts every one of these debates at the root. There is nothing existent except the Creator and the created, and the Creator is distinct from the created. So the one who speaks of jihah is asked: do you mean something existent or something non-existent? If existent, it is created, and Allah is not inside anything created. If non-existent, it is only a name for what is beyond the world, and to say He is “in” it is to say He is not inside anything other than Himself.
Ibn Taymiyyah said in Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā:
So when a group says, Allah is in a jihah or a ḥayyiz, and another group says, Allah is not in a jihah or a ḥayyiz, each of the two is asked what he means, for the words jihah and ḥayyiz carry generality and more than one meaning. And they say: there is nothing existent except the Creator and the created; and Allah, Exalted is He, is transcendent and distinct from His creatures. For He, Glorified is He, created the creatures distinct from Himself, separate from Him, outside His Essence: there is nothing of His Essence in His creatures, nor anything of His creatures in His Essence. Were He not distinct, He would either be intermingled with them and dwelling in them, or a place for them — and Allah is free of that — or He would be neither distinct from them nor intermingled with them, and so He would be non-existent; and Allah is free of that. The Jahmiyyah who deny the attributes sometimes say what entails indwelling and union, or state it openly, and sometimes say what entails denial and negation: so their deniers worship nothing, and their affirmers worship everything. It is also said: if there is nothing existent except the Creator and the created, then the Creator is distinct from the created. So when someone says, He is in a jihah, or is not in a jihah, it is said to him: Is the jihah something existent or non-existent? If it is something existent — and there is nothing existent except the Creator and the created, and the Creator is distinct from the created — then the Lord is not in an existent, created jihah. And if the jihah is something non-existent, in that what is beyond the world is called a jihah, then — since the Creator is distinct from the world, and what is beyond the world is a jihah in name and not an existent thing — Allah is in a non-existent jihah in this sense. But there is no difference between saying “He is in something non-existent” and saying “He is not in anything other than Himself”, for the non-existent is not a thing, by the agreement of the rational. There is no doubt that by the word jihah they sometimes mean something existent and sometimes something non-existent; indeed a single speaker combines this and that in his speech; and when the ambiguity is removed, the reality of the matter appears. So if someone says: Were He in a jihah, it would be eternal with Him — it is said to him: That is if by jihah is meant an existent thing other than Him, and Allah is not in a jihah in that sense. And if he says: Were He seen, He would be in a jihah, and that is impossible — it is said to him: If you mean that He would be in an existent jihah, that is not required; for an existent can be seen though it is not inside another existent, like the world: its surface can be seen, and it is not inside another world. And if he says: I meant that He must be in what is called a jihah, even if non-existent, for if He is distinct from the world, what is beyond the world is called a jihah — it is said to him: Then why did you say that His being in a jihah in this sense is impossible? If he says: Because whatever is distinct from the world and is seen can only be a body or mutaḥayyiz — the discussion has returned to the words body and mutaḥayyiz, as it returned to the word jihah. So it is said to him: By mutaḥayyiz is meant what something else encloses, and by it is meant what is separate from something else and so set apart from it. If you mean the first, He, Glorified is He, is not mutaḥayyiz, for He is distinct from the creatures and nothing else encloses Him; and if you mean the second, then He, Glorified is He, is distinct from the creatures, separate from them, not dwelling in them and not united with them.

He applied the same breakdown to the word mutaḥayyiz. If it means something that another thing encloses, Allah is not mutaḥayyiz, because nothing encloses Him. If it means something distinct and set apart from other things, then Allah is distinct and set apart from His creation, not dwelling in it and not united with it. Every argument of the deniers turns on mixing these meanings, and the breakdown removes the confusion.
He also gave the outcome of the Jahmī position in one sentence: their deniers worship nothing, and their affirmers worship everything. The one who says Allah is neither inside the world nor outside it has described something that does not exist. The one who says Allah is in every place has made the creation the dwelling of its Lord. Between the two, the believer worships the Lord who is above His Throne, distinct from His creation.
Part Five
Principles drawn from the evidence
Eighth Issue: The End of the Matter
The Muslim is not required to say jihah or makān. He is required to say what Allah said: that He rose over the Throne, that He is in the heaven, that the angels ascend to Him and that the Qurʾān was sent down from Him. When the opponents bring these words, he asks them what they mean, accepts the truth in them and rejects the falsehood, and returns to the wording of the revelation, which is free of every ambiguity.
Part Six
The claims of the opponents and their refutation
“Above means a body in a direction”
The claim
Affirming that Allah is above entails that something surrounds Him, as a body is surrounded by its place.
The response
The claim treats “above the world” as if it meant inside something. Above all created things there is no created thing that surrounds Him; the meaning denied — being encompassed and being in need — is denied by Ahl al-Sunnah as well. What remains is what the texts state: that He is above His creation.
The denial is stated openly in their own books. Al-Sanūsī listed “being in a direction” among the things impossible for Allah, and his commentator drew the conclusion himself: so it is not said that He is above the Throne. The word “direction” was introduced in order to deny the Highness that the Qurʾān states.
The imams of the Najdī daʿwah said, in an answer preserved in al-Durar al-Saniyyah:
And al-Sanūsī has opposed the imams of the Sunnah on this question. His wording in Umm al-Barāhīn is: “Among what is impossible in His description, Exalted is He, are twenty attributes” — and among them he mentioned: “that He be in a direction”. Its commentator, Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Tilimsānī, said: “This too is among the kinds of impossible likeness: His being, Exalted is He, in a direction — so it is not said that He, Exalted is He, is above the Throne.”
An answer of the imams of the Najdī daʿwah preserved in al-Durar al-Saniyyah, Kitāb al-Asmāʾ wa-l-Ṣifāt, 3/25, quoting al-Sanūsī, Umm al-Barāhīn, and al-Tilimsānī's commentary

“Hands are raised only because the heaven is the qiblah of supplication”
The claim
People raise their hands to the heaven only because it is the direction set for supplication, as the Kaʿbah is for prayer.
The response
The direction of prayer was fixed by a command, and it was changed by a command; raising the heart and the hands to the heaven was never taught by a command and has never changed. Al-Dārimī and Ibn Qutaybah point to the disposition that precedes any teaching: children raise their hands to the heaven, and hearts rise to Him in distress. The Prophet ﷺ asked “Where is Allah?” and accepted “In the heaven” — he did not ask about the qiblah of supplication.
“Allah is not in a place; He is as He always was”
The claim
Said by the later Ashʿarīs and Māturīdīs
The later Ashʿarīs and Māturīdīs: “Allah exists without a place. He was before He created place, and He is now as He was.”
Its origin Hishām al-Fuwaṭī and ʿAbbād ibn Sulaymān of the Muʿtazilah, as al-Ashʿarī recorded.
The response
This sentence has a known origin, and it is not the Salaf. Al-Ashʿarī himself recorded in Maqālāt al-Islāmiyyīn that the Muʿtazilah differed over place. The majority of them said that Allah is in every place in the sense of governing it. And some of them, Hishām al-Fuwaṭī, ʿAbbād ibn Sulaymān and Abū Zufar, said: the Creator is not in a place; He is as He always was. In the same breath he recorded that the Muʿtazilah interpreted “al-Raḥmān rose over the Throne” as “He conquered”.
Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī said in Maqālāt al-Islāmiyyīn, ed. Ritter:
The saying concerning place. The Muʿtazilah differed over it. Some said: the Creator is in every place, meaning that He governs every place and His governing is in every place; those who held this are the majority of the Muʿtazilah — Abū al-Hudhayl, the two Jaʿfars, al-Iskāfī and Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Jubbāʾī. And some said: the Creator is not in a place; rather He is as He always was. This is the saying of Hishām al-Fuwaṭī, ʿAbbād ibn Sulaymān, Abū Zufar and others among the Muʿtazilah. And the Muʿtazilah said concerning the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, {al-Raḥmān rose over the Throne}: it means He conquered (istawlā).

So the slogan that the later schools teach as the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah is, word for word, the slogan of a faction of the Muʿtazilah, recorded by the founder of the Ashʿarī school as a Muʿtazilī saying. The interpretation of istiwāʾ that they teach with it is, word for word, the interpretation that he recorded as the Muʿtazilah's. They took the creed of the Muʿtazilah on the Highness, kept it, and put the name of al-Ashʿarī on it.
And the phrase “He is as He was before place” proves nothing. Before creation there was nothing besides Allah, so there was nothing for Him to be above. When He created the creation, He created it distinct from Himself, outside His Essence, and He rose over the Throne. The texts state His Highness after the creation, and no one can cancel what the Qurʾān says about the present by imagining what was before the creation existed.
“Where was Allah before creation?”
The claim
Said by the later Ashʿarīs and Māturīdīs
If Allah was without a place before creation, He does not need a place after it. So ask the Atharī: where was Allah before He created the Throne?
Its origin The Jahmī argument from what was before creation.
The response
The question is empty. “Where” asks for the position of one thing relative to another. Before creation there was nothing besides Allah, as the Prophet ﷺ said: Allah was, and there was nothing before Him. Asking where He was then is asking for a relation to things that did not exist, like asking what colour a sound is.
Al-Bukhārī reported in his Ṣaḥīḥ:
ʿAbdān narrated to us, from Abū Ḥamzah, from al-Aʿmash, from Jāmiʿ ibn Shaddād, from Ṣafwān ibn Muḥriz, from ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn, who said: I was with the Prophet ﷺ when some people of Banū Tamīm came to him, and he said: Accept the glad tidings, O Banū Tamīm. They said: You have given us glad tidings, so give us something. Then some people of Yemen came in, and he said: Accept the glad tidings, O people of Yemen, since Banū Tamīm did not accept them. They said: We accept. We have come to you to gain understanding of the religion, and to ask you about the beginning of this matter, what it was. He said: “Allah was, and there was nothing before Him, and His Throne was upon the water; then He created the heavens and the earth, and He wrote everything in the Reminder.”

The question that does have an answer is the one the deniers avoid: now that the creation exists, is Allah inside it or outside it? Ask the denier: is Allah inside you or outside you? If he says inside, he has said what no Muslim says. If he says outside, he has affirmed that Allah is distinct from His creation, and the outside of everything created is above it. If he says neither, he has described the non-existent, as Ibn Taymiyyah said.
Then ask him about the Night Journey. The Prophet ﷺ was taken up from heaven to heaven until he reached the place where he heard the scratching of the pens, and he went back and forth between Mūsā and his Lord over the number of the prayers. If Allah has no direction and is not above, where was the Prophet ﷺ going, and why was the ascent upward?
al-Rāzī: “If He were upon the Throne, the Throne would have been created first”
The claim
Said by Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī in Asās al-Taqdīs
Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī: “If He were settled upon the Throne, it would have been more fitting to begin with the creation of the Throne before the heavens, because on that view the Throne is a place for Him and the heavens are places for His servants, and the mind finds it closer that one prepares a place for oneself before preparing places for one's servants. But it is known that the heavens were created before the Throne, by His saying: He created the heavens and the earth in six days, then rose over the Throne; and ‘then’ indicates sequence.”
Its origin Answered by Ibn Taymiyyah in Bayān Talbīs al-Jahmiyyah.
The response
Ibn Taymiyyah answered this in Bayān Talbīs al-Jahmiyyah, and opened his answer with a judgement on the man: this one and his like bring no argument except that it turns against them. So it is here, and the answer has four parts.
First: the argument helps his opponents. He says that if Allah were above the Throne, the Throne would have been created first. That is exactly what happened. So by his own reasoning, the order of creation supports the Highness.
Second: his claim that the heavens were created before the Throne has no basis. No one among the earlier or later scholars said it. The verse says that Allah rose over the Throne after creating the heavens and the earth; it does not say that He created the Throne then. Where in the verse is “then He created the Throne”? If the Throne had been created at that time, its creation would have been mentioned before the rising over it.
Third: the Qurʾān and the Sunnah state the opposite. Allah said: He created the heavens and the earth in six days, and His Throne was upon the water. The Throne was there while the heavens and the earth were being created. And the Prophet ﷺ answered the people of Yemen: Allah was, and there was nothing before Him, and His Throne was upon the water; then He created the heavens and the earth. Al-Bukhārī put this ḥadīth under the chapter of the Throne in Kitāb al-Tawḥīd.
Allah, the Exalted, said:
Indeed your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then rose over the Throne. He covers the night with the day, which pursues it swiftly; and the sun, the moon and the stars, made subservient by His command. Truly, His are the creation and the command; blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds.

Allah, the Exalted, said:
And He is the One who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and His Throne was upon the water, that He might test you, which of you is best in deed. And if you say: You will be raised after death, those who disbelieve will surely say: This is nothing but clear magic.
Qurʾān 11:7 (Hūd) Read the verse (opens in a new tab)
Fourth: even if it were supposed that the Throne was created after the heavens, nothing would prevent Allah from being above it. Allah created the earth, and then directed Himself to the heaven and made it seven heavens above it. What is created later can be above what was created earlier. So al-Rāzī's argument fails on every assumption, and on the true assumption it proves the opposite of what he wanted.
Allah, the Exalted, said:
It is He who created for you all that is on the earth; then He directed Himself to the heaven and made them seven heavens; and He is Knowing of all things.

“I disbelieve in a Lord who moves from His place”
The claim
Said by the Jahmiyyah
The Jahmī: “Whoever affirms the Descent and the Coming affirms a Lord who moves from place to place like bodies, and I disbelieve in such a Lord.”
Its origin The Jahmī whom al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ answered.
The response
Al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ gave the answer that every Sunnī should keep ready: if a Jahmī says to you, I disbelieve in a Lord who leaves His place, then say: I believe in a Lord who does what He wills. The Jahmī declares disbelief in a Lord he has imagined by likening Him to bodies. The Sunnī believes in the Lord the texts describe, who descends and comes as He wills, without the Jahmī's likening.
Al-Bukhārī said in Khalq Afʿāl al-ʿIbād:
And al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ said: If a Jahmī says to you, “I disbelieve in a Lord who leaves His place”, then say: “I believe in a Lord who does what He wills.”

Imām Aḥmad turned the argument of the Jahmiyyah back on them. You have uttered a tremendous lie against Allah when you claimed that He does not speak; you have likened Him to the idols, for the idols do not speak, do not move, and do not pass from place to place. The Jahmī flees from what he calls likening Allah to the living, and lands in likening Him to the dead stones that the mushrikūn worshipped. The deficiency Allah used to show the falsehood of idols, the Jahmī made a description of the Lord of the worlds.
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said in al-Radd ʿalā al-Jahmiyyah wa-l-Zanādiqah, ed. Ṣabrī:
We said: You have uttered a tremendous lie against Allah when you claimed that He does not speak; you likened Him to the idols that are worshipped besides Allah, for the idols do not speak, do not move, and do not pass from place to place. So when the proof became manifest against him, he said: Allah does speak, but His speech is created.

“Whoever affirms direction is a mujassim”
The claim
Said by the later Ashʿarīs and Māturīdīs
The Ashʿarīs and Māturīdīs: “The Ḥanbalīs and the Salafīs who affirm that Allah is above are mujassimah, mushabbihah and ḥashwiyyah.”
Its origin The Muʿtazilah, who used the same label against the Ashʿarīs themselves.
The response
Ibn Taymiyyah showed where this name-calling comes from and where it ends. Everyone who denies anything of the attributes calls the one who affirms it a mujassim. The Muʿtazilah called the Ṣifātiyyah — everyone who says that Allah is Knowing with knowledge, Powerful with power, Hearing with hearing — mujassimah, mushabbihah and ḥashwiyyah. And the Ṣifātiyyah, he said, include the Ashʿariyyah themselves.
Ibn Taymiyyah said in Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā:
By this detailed distinction the confusion and the leading astray are removed. Otherwise, everyone who denies anything of the names and attributes calls whoever affirms it a mujassim who holds space and direction. So the Muʿtazilah and their like call the Ṣifātiyyah — those who say that Allah, Exalted is He, is Living with life, Knowing with knowledge, Powerful with power, Hearing with hearing, Seeing with sight, Speaking with speech — they call them mujassimah, mushabbihah, ḥashwiyyah. And the Ṣifātiyyah are the Salaf, the imams and all the sects that affirm the attributes, such as the Kullābiyyah, the Karrāmiyyah, the Ashʿariyyah, the Sālimiyyah and other sects of the nation. The deniers of the attributes, of the Jahmiyyah, the Muʿtazilah and a group of the philosophers, said to these: If you affirm life, power and speech for Him, these are accidents, and accidents subsist only in a body; and if you say He is seen, seeing is only of something faced in a direction, and this entails corporealism.

The Muʿtazilah used the very argument against the Ashʿarīs that the Ashʿarīs use against Ahl al-Sunnah: life, power and speech are accidents, accidents subsist only in bodies, so whoever affirms them is a mujassim; and whoever says Allah is seen has affirmed a direction, and that is tajsīm. The Ashʿarī answers the Muʿtazilī: I affirm the attributes and do not call them accidents. Ahl al-Sunnah answer the Ashʿarī with the same words: we affirm the Highness and do not accept your word “body”. If the Ashʿarī's answer is sound, so is ours; if ours is not, neither is his.
The Ashʿarī who calls the Ḥanbalī a mujassim for affirming the Highness has picked up a weapon that the Muʿtazilah forged against himself. He holds it by the blade.

Abū ʿAwānah, al-Balkhī and ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr: Place, Encompassment and the Descent
Abū ʿAwānah, Mustakhraj Abī ʿAwānah
Abū ʿAwānah said in Mustakhraj Abī ʿAwānah:
And I heard some of our companions mention this praise, and he said: “Praise be to Allah who began creation with His blessings, and covered them with His good trial; He set each of them, in his childhood, to seek the nourishment he needs, and subjected to him one who guards him until the time he is independent; then He established proof against those of them who reached maturity by His favours, and left them no excuse by His prophets; He opened the breast of those of His friends whose guidance He loved, and sealed the heart of those of His enemies whose guidance He did not will; He who has not ceased [to be] with His attributes and His names; whom no time contains and no place encompasses; then He created places and times: ‘Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke, and said to it and to the earth: Come, willingly or unwillingly. They said: We come willingly’ [Fuṣṣilat 41:11]; so He measured them in the best measure, and originated them without precedent; He did not raise them with pillars, nor seek anyone's help for them; He adorned them for the beholders…”
Abū ʿAwānah, Mustakhraj Abī ʿAwānah 1/16.
Source, chain and authenticity
The operative verbs are yashtamilu ʿalayh (contain) and yuḥīṭu bih (encompass), and the next words are 'thumma khalaqa al-amākin wa-l-azmān' followed by the verse of istiwāʾ ilā al-samāʾ. This is the same tafṣīl Ibn Taymiyyah states : makān in the sense of something encompassing Him is negated.
Ibn Qudāmah, Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUluww
Ibn Qudāmah said in Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUluww:
And He informed about Pharaoh that he said: “O Hāmān, build for me a tower that I may reach the ways — the ways of the heavens — and look upon the God of Moses; and indeed I think him a liar” [Ghāfir 40:36–37], meaning: I think Moses a liar (in [saying] that Allah, his God, is in the heaven). The one who opposes [us] in this question (has denied this), claiming that Moses lied in this, by way of (certainty) and conviction — in opposition to the Lord of the worlds, charging His truthful, trustworthy Prophet with error, and abandoning the way of the Companions, the Successors, the earlier imams and all of creation. We ask Allah, Exalted is He, to protect us from innovations by His mercy, and grant us success in following His Sunnah.

Ibn Qudāmah said in Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUluww:
Allah, Exalted is He, described Himself with highness (ʿuluww) in the heaven; Muḥammad, the Seal of the Prophets, described Him with that; all the scholars — the God-fearing Companions and the imams among the jurists — agreed upon it; the reports of it have reached the degree of mass-transmission (tawātur) in a way that yields certainty; Allah, Exalted is He, united the hearts of the Muslims upon it and made it ingrained in the nature of all creation: you see them, when distress befalls them, glancing at the heaven with their eyes, raising their hands towards it in supplication, awaiting relief from their Lord, and saying so with their tongues. None denies that except an innovator extreme in his innovation, or one led astray by (blind imitation) and following him upon his misguidance. In this treatise I mention some of the reports that have reached me on this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his Companions and the imams who (followed) his Sunnah, in a way that yields decisive certainty of its authenticity from them, and shows the mass-transmission of the narration of it from them, so that the believers who come upon it increase in faith, and the one to whom it was hidden is alerted, until it becomes as though he saw it with his own eyes, and so that it becomes a proof and demonstration for the one holding fast to the Sunnah.

Abū ʿAwānah, Mustakhraj
Abū ʿAwānah said in Mustakhraj:
Chapter: Explaining the descent of the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, to the lowest heaven; that Allah does not sleep; that He lowers the scale and raises it; that the deeds of the day are raised to Him every day and the deeds of the night every night; and the proof that the Prophet ﷺ was veiled by the light of the Lord of Might from looking at His Face, Blessed and Exalted is He.
Abū ʿAwānah, Mustakhraj 2/112.
Source, chain and authenticity
Point 2 is the strongest and is verified : Abū ʿAwānah's chapter heading groups nuzūl with 'Allah does not sleep', 'He lowers and raises the scale', 'the deeds of the day are raised to Him' and the veil of light — items whose meanings are plainly understood.
TO VERIFY: (a) the work (opponent's 'Kitāb al-Sunnah' of Muḥammad ibn al-Faḍl al-Balkhī al-Ḥanafī) and the editor's conclusion on the death date are not in the local Shamela library (phrase 'lā yuthbatu lillāh taʿālā makān': 0 hits). The argument from the dedication to Sulṭān Maḥmūd ibn Sabuktakīn (r. 388–421) is decisive if the dedication is in the text; quote it from the edition.
The opponent's graphic attributes these two sentences to Muḥammad ibn al-Faḍl al-Balkhī (d. 319), citing 'Kitāb al-Sunnah', ed. Dr. …, p. 48.

If you wish to know that the Jahmī lies against Allah when he claims that Allah is in every place and is not in one place to the exclusion of another, then say: “Was Allah not [existent] when there was nothing?” He will say: “Yes.” Then say to him: “When He created a thing, did He create it within Himself or outside Himself?” He must arrive at one of three positions; he cannot avoid one of them. If he claims that Allah created creation within Himself, he has disbelieved, since he has claimed that jinn, men and devils are within Him…

Exact force: Fuḍayl does not answer the Jahmī by saying 'He does not leave His place'; he answers by affirming the divine will (yafʿalu mā yashāʾ) — i.e. he refuses the Jahmī's framing and affirms the action (nuzūl) as willed. The same logic as Ḥammād ibn Zayd and Isḥāq (Sharḥ Ḥadīth al-Nuzūl). Use it in the nuzūl chapter.
The note 'al-Khallāl provides the chain' — to verify (search al-Khallāl's al-Sunnah for Fuḍayl's statement with a chain). Until found, say 'al-Bukhārī reports it without a chain'.
Ḥarb al-Kirmānī, Ijmāʿ al-Salaf fī al-Iʿtiqād
Ḥarb al-Kirmānī said in Ijmāʿ al-Salaf fī al-Iʿtiqād:
And the Jahmiyyah, enemies of Allah, are those who claim that the Qurʾān is created; that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, did not speak to Moses; that Allah does not speak; that He is not seen; that no place (makān) is known for Allah; and that Allah has neither Throne nor Kursī; and much else that I dislike to relate. They are disbelievers, heretics, enemies of Allah, so beware of them.
Ḥarb al-Kirmānī, Ijmāʿ al-Salaf fī al-Iʿtiqād, p. 81; Masāʾil Ḥarb, ed. Fāyiz Ḥābis 3/980; quoted by al-Dhahabī, al-ʿUluww p. 194.

TEXTUAL VARIANT: the clause 'wa-lā yurā, wa-lā yuʿraf lillāh makān, wa-laysah lillāh ʿarsh wa-lā kursī' is ABSENT from the version transmitted in Ibn Abī Yaʿlā's Ṭabaqāt al-Ḥanābilah (editor's siglum ط), but present in the Masāʾil text and in al-Dhahabī's citation. The editor of Ijmāʿ al-Salaf marks it in brackets with footnote: 'lā tūjad fī (ṭ)'. Any citation of this clause must name the Masāʾil/al-Dhahabī transmission, not the Ṭabaqāt.

Ḥammād ibn Zayd on Allah's Place
Al-ʿUqaylī, al-Ḍuʿafāʾ al-Kabīr
Al-ʿUqaylī reported in al-Ḍuʿafāʾ al-Kabīr:
Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad al-Firyābī narrated to us: Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Muqaddamī narrated to us: Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb narrated to us, saying: Bishr ibn al-Sarī asked Ḥammād ibn Zayd, saying: O Abū Ismāʿīl, the ḥadīth that has come, 'Allah, blessed and exalted, descends to the lowest heaven': does He move about from place to place? Ḥammād was silent, then said: He is in His place, drawing near to His creation however He wills.
al-ʿUqaylī, al-Ḍuʿafāʾ al-Kabīr 1/143; al-Dhahabī, Siyar (ed. al-Ḥadīth) 8/83 via the same chain; Darʾ 2/25; al-ʿArsh 1/229; Majmūʿ 5/376.
Source, chain and authenticity
Context in al-ʿUqaylī: the entry on Bishr ibn al-Sarī opens with al-Ḥumaydī's 'Bishr ibn al-Sarī was a Jahmī; it is not permissible to write from him'. The questioner's background frames Ḥammād's reply. Variant: yatajawwal (al-ʿUqaylī) / yataḥawwal (Darʾ, Siyar).

Ibn Taymiyyah said in Sharḥ Ḥadīth al-Nuzūl:
This and the one before it are two authentic accounts, whose narrators are reliable imams. Ḥammād ibn Zayd says: 'He is in His place, drawing near to His creation however He wills', so he affirmed His nearness to His creation together with His being above His Throne.

Precision on 'affirms a makān': Ḥammād's 'huwa fī makānih' answers 'does He move from place to place?' in the context of the nuzūl. It affirms that He remains where He is (above the Throne) while drawing near as He wills, which is how Ibn Taymiyyah reads it. It is a use of 'makān' for Allah by a major Tābiʿ al-Tābiʿīn. Present it with Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ and Isḥāq with Ibn Ṭāhir , which Ibn Taymiyyah discusses on the same page.
