Part One
The creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah in summary
First Issue: The Word Yad (يَد) in Language and in the Sharīʿah
Yad (يَد) is from the root yāʾ–dāl, with a weak third letter that falls away in the singular and returns in the dual, yadān (يَدَانِ), and in the oblique case, yadayn (يَدَيْنِ). Its first meaning is the hand of a man and of other creatures.
Ibn Fāris said in Maqāyīs al-Lughah, under the root yāʾ–dāl:
* فإنَّ له عندى يُدِيًّا وأنْعُمَا (¬١) *
واليَدُ: القُوَّة، ويجمع على الأيدى.
Yāʾ and dāl: the root of the word yad, the hand, of man and others. It is borrowed for a favour, and it is said: he has a hand (yad) over him; and in that sense it is gathered as ayādī and yudiyy, as the poet said: “for he has with me favours (yudiyy) and blessings”. And al-yad is strength, and in that sense it is gathered as aydī.
Ibn Fāris, Maqāyīs al-Lughah 6/151, root y-d

Ibn Fāris distinguishes the plurals by meaning: the hand as a favour is gathered ayādī (أَيَادٍ), and the hand as strength is gathered aydī (أَيْدٍ). The Arabs did not mix the senses, and they distinguished them by the form and the context. Neither of the borrowed senses comes in the dual with the verb of making attributed to the One who has the hand; that construction belongs to the hand itself.
Yad in the speech of the Arabs is the hand, and the word is also used figuratively for a favour (lahu ʿindī yad: he did me a kindness) and for power (mā lī bihi yadān: I have no strength for it). The question is never what the word can mean in some context, but what it means in the text where Allah used it.
Allah said to Iblīs: “What prevented you from prostrating to what I created with My two Hands?” He used the dual, and He made the creation of Ādam with His Hands a distinction that Ādam had over Iblīs. If the Hands were the power, then Iblīs too was created by the power of Allah, and so was every creature, and there would be no distinction in it at all. If they were the blessing, no Arab says “I made it with my two blessings”, and the blessings of Allah are not two but beyond counting. The dual, the verb of making, and the honouring of Ādam together exclude every interpretation.
Allah said: “Rather, both His Hands are outstretched; He spends however He wills.” He answered the Jews, who said that the Hand of Allah was chained, and He answered with the dual. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah will grasp the earth and fold the heavens in His right Hand, that both His Hands are right, and that the hearts of the children of Ādam are between two of the Fingers of al-Raḥmān. All of these texts speak with one voice.
Part Two
The texts of the Qurʾān and the Sunnah
Second Issue: The Two Hands in the Book of Allah
The Book of Allah mentions the Two Hands in the dual, in the context of creating, of spending, and of the grasp on the Day of Resurrection.
Allah, the Exalted, said to Iblīs:
He said: 'O Iblīs, what prevented you from prostrating to what I created with My two hands? Were you arrogant, or were you of the exalted?'
Qurʾān 38:75 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)
To Iblīs Allah said: “What prevented you from prostrating to what I created with My two Hands?” The dual makes the reading “power” impossible, for His power is not two. In al-Zumar He describes the whole earth as within His grip on the Day of Resurrection and the heavens rolled up in His right Hand.
And He said, answering the Jews:
And the Jews said: The Hand of Allah is chained. Chained are their hands, and they are cursed for what they said. Rather, both His Hands are outstretched; He spends however He wills. And what has been sent down to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. And We have cast among them enmity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection. Every time they kindle the fire of war, Allah extinguishes it. And they strive throughout the land to spread corruption, and Allah does not love the corrupters.
Qurʾān 5:64 (al-Māʾidah) Read the verse (opens in a new tab)
The Jews said that the Hand of Allah is chained, meaning that He is miserly. Allah cursed them and answered: rather, both His Hands are outstretched. He answered with the dual, while they had said the singular. Had the Hand meant the blessing, the answer would have been “His blessings are many”, not “both His Hands”; and had it meant power, power is not described as outstretched in spending.
And He said:
They did not esteem Allah with the esteem due to Him, while the whole earth will be within His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be rolled up in His right hand. Glorified and exalted is He above what they associate with Him.
Qurʾān 39:67 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)
The earth will be in His grasp (qabḍah) and the heavens folded in His right Hand (bi-yamīnih). The right Hand is named, the act of folding is named, and the time is named: the Day of Resurrection. None of the interpretations fit these three together.
Third Issue: The Hands and the Fingers in the Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ
The Sunnah describes the Hands with their acts — grasping, folding, spending, writing — and names the right Hand and the other Hand, and the Fingers.
Al-Bukhārī and Muslim reported from Abū Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
Allah will grasp the earth and fold the heavens in His right hand, then say: I am the King; where are the kings of the earth?

Ādam said to Mūsā: Allah chose you with His speech and wrote for you with His Hand.
Al-Bukhārī and Muslim reported from Abū Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

His right Hand is full and spending does not diminish it, and in His other Hand is the scale, which He lowers and raises. The ḥadīth names both Hands, each with its own act.
Al-Bukhārī and Muslim reported from Abū Hurayrah, in the ḥadīth of the argument between Ādam and Mūsā:
…Ādam said to him: O Mūsā, Allah chose you with His speech and wrote for you with His hand; do you blame me for a matter Allah decreed for me forty years before He created me? So Ādam prevailed over Mūsā in argument, Ādam prevailed over Mūsā (three times).

Source, chain and authenticity
Authentic: Muslim (2788), the second narration, through Abū Ḥāzim, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Miqsam, who saw Ibn ʿUmar demonstrate it.
Ibn ʿUmar demonstrated with his own hand how the Prophet ﷺ described the grasp, closing and opening his hand. The Companions did not fear that demonstrating the act was likening, because they knew that the Hand of Allah is not like the hand of the one demonstrating.
Al-Bukhārī and Muslim reported from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd:
O Muḥammad, we find that Allah will place the heavens on one finger, the earths on one finger, the trees on one finger, the water and the soil on one finger, and the rest of creation on one finger, and say: I am the King.
The hearts of the children of Ādam are between two of the Fingers of al-Raḥmān, and He turns them as He wills. The Prophet ﷺ used to say: O Turner of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion. The Fingers are affirmed as the Sunnah affirmed them, without likening and without asking how.
Fourth Issue: The Grasp and the Folding of the Heavens
Allah said: “And they have not esteemed Allah with the esteem that is His due, while the whole earth will be in His grasp on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right Hand.” He tied the failure to esteem Him rightly to ignorance of this: the one who knew that the whole earth will be in His grasp and the heavens folded in His right Hand would esteem Him as He deserves.
Al-Bukhārī reported in his Ṣaḥīḥ, with his chain, from Abū Hurayrah:
⦗٤٥٦⦘
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ﵁، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ: «يَقْبِضُ اللَّهُ الأَرْضَ، وَيَطْوِي السَّمَاءَ بِيَمِينِهِ، ثُمَّ يَقُولُ: أَنَا الْمَلِكُ، أَيْنَ مُلُوكُ الأَرْضِ
Muḥammad ibn Muqātil narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh informed us: Yūnus informed us, from al-Zuhrī: Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab narrated to me, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “Allah will grasp the earth and fold the heaven in His right Hand; then He will say: I am the King; where are the kings of the earth?”
al-Bukhārī, al-Ṣaḥīḥ, 5/455–456, no. 6519
Source, chain and authenticity
Authentic. It is in the Ṣaḥīḥ of al-Bukhārī, and the ummah received the two Ṣaḥīḥs with acceptance; its full chain is given in the Arabic above.
Abū Hurayrah reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: Allah will grasp the earth and fold the heaven in His right Hand, then He will say: I am the King; where are the kings of the earth? The grasp and the folding are acts done with the Hand, on a Day that has not yet come. They cannot be explained as power, because the power of Allah is over the heavens and the earth now as it will be then, and the ḥadīth describes something that happens on that Day, with the right Hand specifically.
Part Three
The statements of the Salaf
Fifth Issue: The Imams on the Two Hands
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad said in Kitāb al-Sunnah:
489 — I heard my father (may Allah have mercy on him) [say]: Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us the hadith of Sufyān, from al-Aʿmash, from Manṣūr, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAbīdah, from ʿAbd Allāh [ibn Masʿūd], from the Prophet ﷺ: “Allah holds the heavens upon a finger.” My father (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Yaḥyā began pointing with his fingers. And my father showed me how he pointed with his finger, placing one finger after another until he reached the last of them.
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad, Kitāb al-Sunnah 1/264 no. 489
Source, chain and authenticity
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad records that Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated the ḥadīth of the Fingers and indicated them with his own fingers, and that his father showed him how Yaḥyā did it. Ibn Qutaybah, asked what the two Hands are, answered: they are the two Hands that people know, as Ibn ʿAbbās said: the two Hands are the two Hands. Commitment to negating likeness does not lead to denying what Allah described Himself with.
Ibn Qutaybah said in al-Ikhtilāf fī al-Lafẓ wa-l-Radd ʿalā al-Jahmiyyah:
كذلك قال ابن عباس في هذه الآية: (اليدان اليدان)
وقال النبي ﷺ: ((كلتا يديه يمين)) فهل يجوز لأحد أن يجعل اليدين ههنا نعمة أو نعمتين وقال: ﴿لما خلقت بيدي﴾ فنحن نقول كما قال الله تعالى وكما قال رسوله ولا نتجاهل ولا يحملنا ما نحن فيه من نفي التشبيه على أن ننكر ما وصف به
If he says to us: What are the two hands here? We say: They are the two hands that people know. Likewise Ibn ʿAbbās said about this verse: 'The two hands are the two hands.' And the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Both of His hands are right hands.' Is it then permissible for anyone to make the two hands here a favour or two favours, when He said: 'what I created with My two hands'? So we say as Allah, the Exalted, said and as His Messenger said; we do not feign ignorance, nor does our commitment to negating likeness lead us to deny what He described [Himself] with…
Ibn Qutaybah, al-Ikhtilāf fī al-Lafẓ wa-l-Radd ʿalā al-Jahmiyyah p. 41
Source, chain and authenticity
Ibn Qutaybah answered the Jahmiyyah in one sentence: they are the two Hands that people know. He did not mean that they are like the hands of people; he meant that the word has its known meaning in the language, and that Allah's Hands are real Hands, as His knowledge is real knowledge and His hearing real hearing, none of them like those of creatures.
Part Four
Principles drawn from the evidence
Sixth Issue: The Rules Concerning the Hands
The first rule: Allah has two Hands, as the Qurʾān states in the dual. The plural in “of what Our Hands have made” is the plural of majesty that the Arabs use when the speaker is great, and it does not contradict the dual, just as Allah says “We” of Himself while He is One.
The second rule: the Hands are attributes of His Essence. He grasps with them, folds the heavens with them, created Ādam with them, wrote the Torah with them and planted the Garden of ʿAdn with them. Ahl al-Sunnah affirm all of this without asking how, and without likening the Hand of Allah to the hand of a creature.
The third rule: the Fingers are affirmed by the authentic Sunnah. When the rabbi said that Allah holds the heavens on a Finger and the earths on a Finger, the Prophet ﷺ laughed in confirmation of what he said and recited: “They have not esteemed Allah with the esteem that is His due.” Whoever says the laughter was a rebuke has contradicted the Companion who reported it, who said it was in confirmation.
Part Five
The claims of the opponents and their refutation
The Jahmiyyah, the Muʿtazilah and the later Ashʿarīs: “the Hand means power or blessing”
The claim
Said by the Jahmiyyah and the Muʿtazilah, and after them by the later Ashʿarīs and Māturīdīs
The Hand of Allah means His power or His blessing. So “what I created with My two Hands” means: with My power, or with My two blessings.
Its origin The Jahmiyyah, who denied every attribute; the imams of the Najdī daʿwah named it among the taʾwīls of the Ashʿarīs.
The response
They interpret the two Hands as power or blessing. These interpretations contradict the context of the speech, and they have no basis in the language or in the Sharīʿah. On their claim, “what prevented you from prostrating to what I created with My two Hands” means: with My two powers. This is refuted by the fact that Allah has power, and it is not said that Allah has two powers; rather, one complete power that nothing frustrates and nothing resists. And His blessings, Exalted is He, are not two blessings, but countless blessings.
And if the meaning of “what I created with My two Hands” were “with My power”, Ādam would have had no distinction: Ādam would be like everyone else, for everything is created by His power. Iblīs too was created by the power of Allah, and he could have answered: and I too was created by Your power.
The imams of the Najdī daʿwah said, in an answer preserved in al-Durar al-Saniyyah:
As for Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah, they describe Allah with everything with which He described Himself, as befits His majesty and greatness. They affirm the Descent, as the authentic Sunnah came with it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that he said: “Our Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven when the last third of the night remains” to the end. They affirm the attribute of the two Hands as befits His majesty and greatness, and likewise the attribute of the noble Face, as befits His majesty and greatness, and likewise the Laughter that the Sunnah came with, the Wonder, the Anger, the Pleasure, the two Handfuls and the Fingers. They describe Allah with what He described Himself with or what His Messenger described Him with, and from all of that they understand only what befits Allah and His greatness, not what befits creatures of limbs and organs — exalted is Allah far above that. By this is attained the affirmation of what He described Himself with in His Book and in the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ; and also the negation of likening and of asking how in His attributes; and also the abandonment of taʾwīl and taḥrīf that lead to taʿṭīl; and also the affirmation of the attributes as befits the majesty and greatness of Allah, not according to what we understand of the attributes of creatures. As for the Ashʿarīs, they interpret the texts that came in the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger: they interpret the Istiwāʾ as conquering (istīlāʾ), the Descent as the descent of the command, the two Hands as the two powers and the two blessings, the Foot as a “foot of truthfulness”, and the like.

Allah said “with My two Hands”. His power is not two, and His blessings are not two; the dual leaves the interpretation no place. Had “hand” meant power, Ādam would have no distinction over Iblīs, for Iblīs too was created by His power. Al-Tirmidhī records this very interpretation as the doctrine of the Jahmiyyah, against the people of knowledge.
The imams of the daʿwah named these interpretations precisely: the Istiwāʾ as conquering, the Descent as the descent of the command, the two Hands as two powers or two blessings, the Foot as a “foot of truthfulness”. Against them they set the way of Ahl al-Sunnah, which affirms what Allah affirmed, denies likening and the question “how”, and abandons the taʾwīl that leads to denial.
The interpretation of the Hand as power is the interpretation of the Jahmiyyah, whom the Salaf judged. Whoever takes it today has taken the doctrine of Jahm and Bishr al-Marīsī, whatever school he names himself by; the change of name does not change the doctrine.
“Hands means limbs like ours”
The claim
Said by the Jahmiyyah, the Muʿtazilah and those who followed them, against everyone who affirms the attributes
Affirming Hands for Allah means affirming limbs like the limbs of creatures.
Its origin The premise of Jahm that every attribute affirmed is a likening.
The response
Allah affirmed the Hands and negated likeness in the same Book: “There is nothing like Him.” Ibn Qutaybah answers that commitment to negating likeness does not lead to denying what He described Himself with, and Isḥāq defines tashbīh as saying “a hand like my hand” — which Ahl al-Sunnah never say.

What Is the Meaning of the Hand of Allah? Answering the Ashʿarī Argument
Qurʾān
Allah, the Exalted, said:
They did not esteem Allah with the esteem due to Him, while the whole earth will be within His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be rolled up in His right hand. Glorified and exalted is He above what they associate with Him.

State the objection in its strongest form before answering it. The Ashʿarī argument is: (1) a hand, in the language, is a bodily member (jāriḥah); (2) bodily members are impossible for Allah; therefore (3) one who 'affirms the apparent meaning' while denying members either affirms members or affirms only a word. The essay's answer, in substance, is that premise (1) generalises from created hands. A word's core meaning (here: that by which one grasps, takes, holds and creates) is shared, while the reality and modality of each instance follow the one it is attributed to. Ibn Taymiyyah sets this out in al-Risālah al-Tadmuriyyah (al-aṣl al-awwal and the mithāl of the soul) and in al-Risālah al-Madaniyyah; cite those pages when the compilation is done.
Ibn Taymiyyah, Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā
Ibn Taymiyyah said in Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā:
The sum of the matter is that the possible positions on the verses and ḥadīths of the attributes are six, each held by a group of the people of the qiblah. Two say: they run according to their apparent meaning (ẓāhir); two say: they are contrary to their apparent meaning; and two remain silent. As for the first, they are two groups. (1) One runs them on their apparent meaning but makes that apparent meaning of the genus of creatures' attributes: these are the mushabbihah; their position is false, the Salaf rejected it, and the refutation is directed at them. (2) The second runs them on their apparent meaning befitting the majesty of Allah — just as one runs the apparent meaning of the names al-ʿAlīm, al-Qadīr, al-Rabb, al-Ilāh, al-Mawjūd, al-Dhāt and the like on their apparent meaning befitting the majesty of Allah …

Al-Dhahabī said in Siyar Aʿlām al-Nubalāʾ:
I say: 'the apparent meaning' (al-ẓāhir) has today become two apparent meanings, one true and the other false. The true one is to say: He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, Willing, Speaking, Living, All-Knowing; everything perishes except His Face; He created Ādam with His hand, spoke to Mūsā directly, and took Ibrāhīm as an intimate friend, and the like. We pass it on as it came, and we understand from it what the speech indicates, as befits Him, Exalted is He, and we do not say it has a taʾwīl contrary to that. The other apparent meaning — the false one, misguidance — is to believe that the unseen is to be measured by the seen and to liken the Creator to His creation, exalted is Allah above that. Rather His attributes are like His essence: He has no equal, no opposite, no peer, no like and no resemblance; 'there is nothing like Him', neither in His essence nor in His attributes. In this the jurist and the layman are alike. And Allah knows best.

Ibn Taymiyyah said in Bayān Talbīs al-Jahmiyyah:
Nor is it known from any of the Salaf that he said that what Allah, Exalted is He, intends by them is other than their apparent meaning — let alone that he said it is obligatory to be certain of that. Rather, the word 'ẓāhir' is ambiguous (mujmal): by 'the apparent meaning' may be meant what resembles the attributes of creatures, and this is what the Salaf negated, as the Book indicates — and reason likewise. He said, Exalted is He: {There is nothing like Him} [42:11]; {And there is none comparable to Him} [112:4]; {Do you know of any namesake of His?} [19:65]. So whoever says that when He rose over the Throne it was like the rising of a king, such that He would be in need of the Throne — this is a reprehensible likening (tamthīl).

'That you might understand': He says: so that you understand its meanings and the admonitions it contains, and He did not send it down in the tongue of non-Arabs, making it foreign, so that you would say: We are Arabs and this is foreign speech whose meanings we do not comprehend.

The argument from 43:3 is stronger with al-Ṭabarī's full sentence. He contrasts the Arabic Qurʾān with 'foreign speech whose meanings we do not comprehend', so a revelation whose attribute-verses have no understood meaning would be in the position al-Ṭabarī says the Arabic Qurʾān is not in. Add Q 38:29 (li-yaddabbarū āyātih) and Mujāhid's 'I went through the Muṣḥaf with Ibn ʿAbbās three times, stopping at every verse and asking him about it' (Tafsīr al-Ṭabarī, introduction) as further evidence.
(1) 'They do not believe Allah is a real thing somewhere. Instead He is absolutely nowhere' misstates the Ashʿarī position. They affirm that Allah exists (mawjūd) and is not in a place or direction (lā fī makān wa-lā fī jiha). The fair statement is: 'they deny that He is in a direction, above the world, distinct from it', which is precisely what the Atharīs dispute. The Atharī rejoinder (Ibn Taymiyyah, Bayān Talbīs) is that an existent that is neither inside the world nor outside it, neither connected nor separate, cannot be distinguished from the non-existent. Cite that, rather than attribute 'He is nowhere' to them. (2) 'concrete thing' needs care: what the essay means is that the hand is an attribute of the essence (ṣifah dhātiyyah khabariyyah), not an attribute of meaning (ṣifah maʿnawiyyah) like hearing and seeing. Use that established terminology.
Al-Bukhārī, al-Ṣaḥīḥ
Al-Bukhārī reported in his Ṣaḥīḥ from Ibn Masʿūd:
A rabbi from among the rabbis came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'O Muḥammad, we find that Allah places the heavens on a finger, the earths on a finger, the trees on a finger, the water and the moist soil on a finger, and the rest of creation on a finger, and says: I am the King.' The Prophet ﷺ laughed until his molar teeth showed, in confirmation of what the rabbi said; then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited: {They did not esteem Allah with the esteem due to Him, while the whole earth will be within His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens rolled up in His right hand. Glorified and exalted is He above what they associate with Him}.

Source, chain and authenticity
Precision and fairness, since this is the most contested claim in the essay. (a) Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah's own transmission in ʿAbd Allāh's al-Sunnah (no. 1162, Ḥumayd al-Aʿraj ← Mujāhid ← ʿUbayd) ends: 'until he reaches a place Allah knows best'; no. 1085 (Abū Maʿmar ← Sufyān, same chain) reads 'draw near, draw near, to a place Allah knows best'. The words 'until he places his hand in His hand' come in no. 1163 through al-Aqraʿ, who reports that Sufyān added it. So 'Sufyān added, with a chain of reliable men' should read: 'al-Aqraʿ reported that Sufyān added…; the editor of al-Sunnah says of no. 1163: its men are reliable (rijāluhu thiqāt)'. (b) The 'touch' wording ('ḥattā yamassa baʿḍahu') is via Manṣūr ← Mujāhid. Al-Khallāl's editor (al-Zahrānī) grades its chain ṣaḥīḥ but says it cannot override the tanzīh texts . (c) The report is a tābiʿī's tafsīr, not marfūʿ. (d) The author's 'I also affirm touch' is the author's own position, and he notes that some Atharīs suspend judgement (tawaqquf).
Numbering checked on the page: al-Bukhārī 6661 (Sulṭāniyyah 8/134) — Anas: 'Hell keeps saying: Are there more? until the Lord of Might places His foot in it' — correct.

1162. Hārūn ibn Maʿrūf narrated to me: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from Ḥumayd, meaning al-Aʿraj, from Mujāhid, from ʿUbayd, meaning Ibn ʿUmayr, who said: Dāwūd, peace be upon him, will not feel safe on the Day of Resurrection until it is said to him: Come near. He will say: My sin, my sin! … It will be said to him: Come near. He will say: My sin, my sin! until he reaches a place Allah knows best … 1163. Hārūn ibn Maʿrūf narrated to me: al-Aqraʿ narrated to us that Sufyān added to it: 'until He places His hand in his hand' [or: 'until he places his hand in His hand']. (1) 'Left Hand (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2788)': the word bi-shimālihi in Muslim 2788 is in ʿUmar ibn Ḥamzah's narration from Sālim. Al-Bayhaqī (al-Asmāʾ wa-l-Ṣifāt) judged this word a solitary addition (tafarrud) of ʿUmar ibn Ḥamzah, and several Atharīs held both hands to be 'right' following Muslim 1827 ('wa-kiltā yadayhi yamīn'). Others accepted 'shimāl' (e.g. Abū Yaʿlā). Present the disagreement, not the word alone.

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad reported in al-Sunnah:
1021. My father narrated to me: Wakīʿ narrated to us, from Sufyān, from ʿAmmār al-Duhnī, from Muslim al-Baṭīn, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said: The Kursī is the place of His two feet, and the Throne: no one can measure its measure.
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad, al-Sunnah 2/454 no. 1021; also 1/301 (323/542)
Source, chain and authenticity
Here the chain runs through Aḥmad ← Wakīʿ ← Sufyān (al-Thawrī).
Ibn ʿAbbās's report is the textual basis for the essay's 'His attributes have positions'. It is mawqūf, with a chain graded ṣaḥīḥ by al-Ḥākim and al-Dhahabī . Present it with both routes (Wakīʿ and Abū ʿĀṣim from Sufyān) and note the alternative report from Ibn ʿAbbās ('kursiyyuhu ʿilmuh', via Jaʿfar ibn Abī al-Mughīrah in al-Ṭabarī), which al-Ṭabarī preferred and which Atharī critics answer on grounds of its chain. That makes the case complete rather than one-sided.
Ibn Taymiyyah, Bayān Talbīs al-Jahmiyyah
Ibn Taymiyyah said in Bayān Talbīs al-Jahmiyyah:
[And Allah, Glorified is He, is] al-Ṣamad: separation and detachment are not possible for Him, as was explained earlier; this name entails cohesion and strength and precludes separation and detachment. And since being al-Ṣamad is necessary for Him, cohesion is necessary for Him and separation is impossible for His essence.
Ibn Taymiyyah, Bayān Talbīs al-Jahmiyyah 4/82

The same point recurs at Bayān 7/573–574 (2864/4309–4310), on the meanings of al-Ṣamad.

The Ibn Taymiyyah quotation is given without a reference. Also define 'part' (juzʾ / baʿḍ) as the essay does: separable and joinable. Then note that the early texts use baʿḍ without implying separability, which is the essay's own point.

Al-Ghazālī, al-Iqtiṣād fī al-Iʿtiqād
Al-Ghazālī said in al-Iqtiṣād fī al-Iʿtiqād:
The answer: the verifiers among the people of truth have explicitly affirmed the kinds of perception along with hearing, sight and knowledge, which is perfection in perception, without the causes that customarily accompany them, namely contact (mumāssah) and meeting (mulāqāt), for that is impossible for Allah, the Exalted.
al-Ghazālī, al-Iqtiṣād fī al-Iʿtiqād p. 67
Source, chain and authenticity
CONTEXT: the sentence concerns the perceptions (smell, taste, touch) and states that the verifiers affirm perception without the contact that accompanies it in creatures. That is accurate as far as contact goes ('that is impossible for Allah'), but the topic is perception. Record the context.

I [al-Bayhaqī] say: Some of the people of speculative reasoning (ahl al-naẓar) have said about the meaning of 'hand' in places other than these: it may mean power, as Allah said: 'And remember Our servant Dāwūd, possessor of strength (dhā al-ayd)' [Ṣād 17]; it may mean dominion and power, as He said: 'Say: bounty is in the hand of Allah; He gives it to whom He wills' [Āl ʿImrān 73]; it may mean favour, as the Arabs say: 'How many a hand I have with so-and-so', i.e. how many a favour I have done him; it may mean connection (ṣilah), as He said: 'of what Our hands have made, cattle' [Yā Sīn 71], i.e. of what We Ourselves made, and He said: 'or the one in whose hand is the marriage contract' [al-Baqarah 237], i.e. the one who has the marriage contract; and it may mean the bodily member, as Allah said: 'And take in your hand a bunch [of twigs] and strike with it, and do not break your oath' [Ṣād 44]. As for His word, Mighty and Majestic: 'O Iblīs, what prevented you from prostrating to what I created with My two hands?' [Ṣād 75]: it is not permissible to take it as the bodily member, because the Creator, Majestic is His praise, is One, and division into parts is not permissible for Him; nor as power, dominion, favour or connection, because then His friend Ādam and His enemy Iblīs would share in it, and what He mentioned of Ādam's preference over him would be void, since the meaning of specification would be void. So nothing remains but to take them as two attributes connected with the creation of Ādam, as an honour to him, and not with the creation of Iblīs, as the connection of power with its object, not by way of direct handling (mubāsharah), nor in the manner of touch (mumāssah). And likewise they are connected with what we have narrated in the reports of the writing of the Torah and the planting of [the Garden of] honour…
al-Bayhaqī, al-Asmāʾ wa-l-Ṣifāt 2/126–127
Source, chain and authenticity
The passage opens 'qultu: wa-qad qālah baʿḍ ahl al-naẓar …': al-Bayhaqī is relaying a view of 'some of the ahl al-naẓar' (the structure matches Abū Bakr ibn Fūrak / al-Ashʿarī's school), without dissent. Record it as 'al-Bayhaqī, quoting with approval some of the ahl al-naẓar'. Note also what the passage affirms: it rejects reading the two hands as power or favour and affirms 'two attributes' (ṣifatayn). The disagreement with the Atharīs is over 'not by direct handling, not by touch', not over whether the hands are attributes.

Ibn Abī Shayba, al-Muṣannaf, Ed. al-Ḥūt
Ibn Abī Shayba reported in al-Muṣannaf, ed. al-Ḥūt:
33957. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr narrated to us: Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid narrated to us, from Ḥakīm ibn Jābir, who said: Allah, blessed and exalted, did not touch with His hand anything of His creation except three things: He created Paradise with His hand, then made its soil saffron-dye (wars) and saffron and its mountains musk; He created Ādam with His hand; and He wrote the Torah for Mūsā.
Ibn Abī Shayba, al-Muṣannaf, ed. al-Ḥūt, 7/28 no. 33957; ed. al-Shathrī 19/138 no. 36661 (333/42015), reading 'gharasa al-jannah'
Source, chain and authenticity
Variant: al-Ḥūt 'khalaqa al-jannah'; al-Shathrī '(gharasa) al-jannah', with the editor's note; al-Dhahabī 'gharasa al-jannah'.
Al-Dhahabī said in Kitāb al-Arbaʿīn fī Ṣifāt Rabb al-ʿĀlamīn:
77. And it is authentically established from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from Ḥakīm ibn Jābir, who said: I was informed that your Lord did not touch with His hand except three things: He planted Paradise with His hand, created Ādam with His hand and wrote the Torah with His hand.
al-Dhahabī, Kitāb al-Arbaʿīn fī Ṣifāt Rabb al-ʿĀlamīn p. 80, no. 77. Grading: al-Dhahabī's 'ṣaḥḥah'
Source, chain and authenticity
Al-Dhahabī's no. 78 adds: 'and it is authentic from Mughīth ibn Sumayy similarly'.

Two corrections. (1) The chain Ibn Abī Shayba ← ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr ← Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid ← Ḥakīm ibn Jābir is sound to Ḥakīm; al-Dhahabī says 'ṣaḥḥah ʿan' (Arbaʿīn no. 77). But in al-Dhahabī's wording Ḥakīm says 'ukhbirtu' ('I was informed that your Lord…'), i.e. he names no source. Ibn Abī Shayba's wording gives it as Ḥakīm's own statement. It is therefore a maqṭūʿ report of a Tābiʿī about the unseen, from an unnamed informant in one version; the content may well come from the People of the Book. State this precisely. Its value is as evidence of what an early Tābiʿī accepted, not as a ḥadīth.
Attribute it as 'al-Bayhaqī, relaying some of the ahl al-naẓar' .
The Hands of Allah: Ibn Qutaybah and the Report of Aḥmad's Gesture
Ibn Qutaybah, al-Ikhtilāf fī al-Lafẓ wa-l-Radd ʿalā al-Jahmiyyah
Ibn Qutaybah (d. 276) is a strong witness because he grants that 'yad' can mean favour or power in some contexts, then argues from Ṣād 75 ('with My two hands'), the dual, and Ādam's distinction over Iblīs that here it can only be the hand itself. That is the same argument al-Bayhaqī's source uses against favour/power . The difference is that Ibn Qutaybah stops at 'we do not say how', while the later Ashʿarīs add 'not by contact'.
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad, al-Sunnah
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad reported in al-Sunnah:
489. I heard my father, may Allah have mercy on him, [say]: Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us the ḥadīth of Sufyān, from al-Aʿmash, from Manṣūr, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAbīdah, from ʿAbd Allāh [ibn Masʿūd], from the Prophet ﷺ: 'Allah holds the heavens on a finger.' My father said: Yaḥyā began pointing with his fingers. And my father showed me how [Yaḥyā] pointed with his finger, putting down finger by finger until he came to the last of them.
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad, al-Sunnah 1/264 no. 489. The ḥadīth of the rabbi: al-Bukhārī 4811, 7414; Muslim 2786
Source, chain and authenticity
The editor's footnote reproduces Ibn Ḥajar said in Fatḥ al-Bārī:
[Editor's footnote, not ʿAbd Allāh's words] Ibn Khuzaymah added, from Muḥammad ibn Khallād, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān, from al-Aʿmash, and he mentioned the ḥadīth: Muḥammad said: Yaḥyā counted them for us on his fingers. Likewise Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal transmitted it in Kitāb al-Sunnah from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd and said: Yaḥyā began pointing with his finger, putting a finger upon a finger until he came to the last of them. And Abū Bakr al-Khallāl narrated it in Kitāb al-Sunnah from Abū Bakr al-Marrūdhī from Aḥmad, and said: I saw Abū ʿAbd Allāh pointing finger by finger. And in the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿAbbās in al-Tirmidhī: 'A Jew passed by the Prophet ﷺ…'
The editor's footnote reproduces Ibn Ḥajar, Fatḥ al-Bārī 13/397, on al-Bukhārī 7414
Source, chain and authenticity
No. 489 itself reports Yaḥyā gesturing and Aḥmad showing his son how Yaḥyā did it.
'Chain to Imam Aḥmad: authentic': ʿAbd Allāh reports what he saw his father do, so the chain to Aḥmad is ʿAbd Allāh himself. The report describes Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān gesturing, and Aḥmad demonstrating Yaḥyā's gesture. Aḥmad's own gesturing is in al-Khallāl via al-Marrūdhī, known through Fatḥ al-Bārī 13/397 .
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad, al-Sunnah
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad reported in al-Sunnah:
488. My father narrated to me: Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, from Sufyān: Manṣūr and Sulaymān narrated to me, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAbīdah, from ʿAbd Allāh, may Allah be pleased with him, that a Jew came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Muḥammad, Allah holds the heavens on a finger, the earths on a finger, the soil on a finger, the mountains on a finger and creation on a finger, then says: I am the King. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molars showed, and recited: 'They have not esteemed Allah as He deserves.' My father said: Yaḥyā said: Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed out of wonder and in confirmation of him.
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad, al-Sunnah 1/264 no. 488
Source, chain and authenticity
Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ's gloss, 'out of wonder and in confirmation of him', answers the claim that the Prophet's laugh was a rejection of the rabbi. Ibn Masʿūd's own words in al-Bukhārī 4811 are 'taṣdīqan li-qawl al-ḥabr' .
Ibn Ḥajar, Fatḥ al-Bārī
Ibn Ḥajar said in Fatḥ al-Bārī:
…and likewise Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal transmitted it in Kitāb al-Sunnah from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, and said: Yaḥyā began pointing with his finger, placing a finger on a finger until he came to the last of them. And Abū Bakr al-Khallāl narrated it in Kitāb al-Sunnah from Abū Bakr al-Marrūdhī, from Aḥmad, and said: I saw Abū ʿAbd Allāh pointing finger by finger.
Ibn Ḥajar, Fatḥ al-Bārī 13/397, citing al-Khallāl's al-Sunnah; also in Abū Yaʿlā, Ibṭāl al-Taʾwīlāt p. 369 (footnote)
Source, chain and authenticity
This is the source of the 'Aḥmad gestured himself' report. Al-Khallāl's text is known here through Ibn Ḥajar's citation (not found in the surviving al-Sunnah).
