الإيمان · Īmān and Its Opposites · Chapter 1 of 1

Īmān: Speech and Action, Its Increase and Decrease, and the Refutation of the Murjiʾah and the Khawārij

On: Iman, Eman, what is Iman, Takfir, Murjiah, Khawarij, does faith increase and decrease, excuse of ignorance, Udhr bil Jahl

Īmān is speech and action: the speech of the heart and the tongue, and the action of the heart, the tongue and the limbs. It increases by obedience and decreases by disobedience, and the Salaf reported a consensus upon this. The study explains the word, its texts, its causes of increase, Islām and īmān, the exception, and the state of the sinner, and then answers the Khawārij, the Muʿtazilah, Jahm, al-Bāqillānī and the jurists of irjāʾ from their own words.

Part One

The creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah in summary

First Issue: The Word Īmān and What It Means

Everything in this chapter turns on the meaning of one word. The Book and the Sunnah command it, promise Paradise for it and threaten the Fire for its absence, and every party that has gone astray over the believer and the sinner went astray first in defining it.

The theologians say that īmān in the language means nothing more than taṣdīq (تَصْدِيق), to hold a report true. Ibn Taymiyyah examined that claim in detail, and the result of his examination is that the two words differ in their grammar and in their meaning. In grammar, one says ṣaddaqahu, “he believed him”, directly, while one never says āmanahu in that sense. One says āmanah lahu, with the lām, as in “So Lūṭ believed him”. It has the construction of aqarra lahu, “he acknowledged to him”, and so the word is nearer to acknowledgement. Then there is the meaning:

He said in Kitāb al-Īmān:

The second is that it is not synonymous with the word taṣdīq in meaning. For anyone who reports something, seen or unseen, is told in the language: You have spoken truly (ṣadaqtah), as he is told: You have lied. Whoever says, “The sky is above us”, it is said of him that he spoke truly, as it is said that he lied. As for the word īmān, it is only used of a report about what is absent. It is not found in speech that of someone who reports what is seen, such as saying “The sun has risen” or “has set”, one says āmannāhu, as one says ṣaddaqnāhu. For this reason it is said of those who narrate reports and of witnesses and the like: We hold them truthful, and it is not said: āmannā lahum. For īmān is derived from amn, safety, and so it is only used of a report in which the reporter is entrusted, such as an absent matter over which the reporter is trusted.

So the word carries trust and safety within it. When a person has īmān in a Messenger, he has placed his safety in what the Messenger told him of the unseen, and he has acknowledged and submitted to it. Merely registering that the report is true is something that Iblīs, Pharaoh and the Jews did, and they are not believers.

In the Sharīʿah, the definition of Ahl al-Sunnah is that of Ibn Taymiyyah in al-Wāsiṭiyyah:

He said:

Among the foundations of Ahl al-Sunnah is that the religion and īmān are speech and action: the speech of the heart and the tongue, and the action of the heart, the tongue and the limbs; and that īmān increases by obedience and decreases by disobedience.

This gives five things. The speech of the heart is its belief and acknowledgement. The speech of the tongue is the testimony. The action of the heart is its love, fear, hope, reliance and sincerity. The action of the tongue is what is done with it, such as recitation and remembrance. The action of the limbs is prayer, fasting and the like. The same creed can be given in three phrases: the acknowledgement of the heart, the utterance of the tongue and the action of the limbs. The Salaf said it in different wordings and with one meaning. Ibn Taymiyyah explains that those who said “speech and action” meant the whole of both, and that some added “and intention” for those who would not understand that it is included, and that others added “in accord with the Sunnah” (Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā 7/506).

Part Two

The texts of the Qurʾān and the Sunnah

Second Issue: The Texts of the Book

The Qurʾān describes the believers by what is in their hearts and what they do, and it uses the word “only”.

Allah, the Exalted, said in Sūrat al-Anfāl:

The believers are only those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned, and when His verses are recited to them, they increase them in faith, and upon their Lord they rely; those who establish the prayer and spend from what We have provided them. Those are the believers in truth. They have degrees with their Lord, and forgiveness and a noble provision.

Sūrat al-Anfāl, 8:2–4 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)

Fear in the heart is an action of the heart, and so is reliance. The establishing of prayer is the action of the limbs, and spending is an action of the hand. All of this is placed under “the believers”, and at the end He says “in truth”. Next, the Book calls an act of the limbs by the very name of īmān:

He said in Sūrat al-Baqarah, when the qiblah was changed and the Companions asked about those who had died praying towards Jerusalem:

And thus We have made you a just community, so that you may be witnesses over the people and the Messenger may be a witness over you. And We did not appoint the qiblah which you used to face except that We might know who follows the Messenger from who turns back on his heels. And it was a great thing, except for those whom Allah guided. And Allah would not let your faith go to waste. Indeed, Allah is Kind and Merciful to the people.

Sūrat al-Baqarah, 2:143 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)

“Your faith” here is your prayer, for that is what they had asked about. And Sūrat al-Bayyinah names the religion as a whole. Al-Shāfiʿī said to al-Ḥumaydī that there is no verse stronger against the people of irjāʾ than this, as Ibn Taymiyyah reports from the Manāqib of Ibn Abī Ḥātim (Kitāb al-Īmān, p. 166):

He said in Sūrat al-Bayyinah:

And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, making the religion sincerely His, as upright people, and to establish the prayer and give the zakāh. And that is the religion of the upright.

Sūrat al-Bayyinah, 98:5 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)

Third Issue: The Texts of the Sunnah

In the ḥadīth of Jibrīl, the Prophet ﷺ explained the word when he was asked about it alongside Islām:

Muslim reported in his Ṣaḥīḥ from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb:

He said: Then tell me about īmān. He said: “That you believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers and the Last Day, and that you believe in the Qadar, its good and its evil.”

These are the six pillars, the inner foundation of the faith. And in the following ḥadīth the same Prophet ﷺ tells of its branches, and he takes in the tongue, the limbs and the heart in one statement:

Muslim reported from Abū Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

Īmān has sixty-odd branches. The most excellent of them is the saying of lā ilāhah illā Allāh, the lowest of them is removing something harmful from the road, and modesty is a branch of īmān.

The saying is an action of the tongue, the removal is an action of the hand, and modesty is in the heart. He calls all of them branches of one tree. And the word “lowest” shows that the branches are of different ranks. A thing that has a highest and a lowest has parts, and a thing that has parts can have more or less of them.

And Muslim reported from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:

Whoever of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he cannot, then with his tongue; and if he cannot, then with his heart, and that is the weakest of īmān.

“The weakest of īmān”: Muslim placed it under the heading that īmān increases and decreases. And the Prophet ﷺ has told us that a very small amount of it remains in a person and saves him:

Al-Bukhārī reported in his Ṣaḥīḥ from Anas that the Prophet ﷺ said:

There will come out of the Fire whoever said lā ilāhah illā Allāh and has in his heart the weight of a barley grain of good. There will come out of the Fire whoever said lā ilāhah illā Allāh and has in his heart the weight of a wheat grain of good. There will come out of the Fire whoever said lā ilāhah illā Allāh and has in his heart the weight of an atom of good.

Al-Bukhārī adds that another narration from Qatādah has “of īmān” in place of “of good”. So it is weighed in grains and atoms. That is the end of the doctrine that it is one thing, either wholly present or wholly absent.

Part Three

The statements of the Salaf

Fourth Issue: The Consensus of the Salaf

This was not a matter of difference among the Companions and those who followed them. Al-Shāfiʿī transmits a consensus upon it:

Ibn Taymiyyah quotes from al-Shāfiʿī’s al-Umm:

Al-Shāfiʿī said in al-Umm, in the chapter on the intention in prayer: It is argued that no prayer suffices without an intention, from the ḥadīth of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb from the Prophet ﷺ: “Actions are only by intentions.” Then he said: And the consensus of the Companions, of the Successors after them and of those whom we have met was that they said: Īmān is speech, action and intention; no one of the three suffices without the others.

And Isḥāq ibn Rāhawayh dictated the same, and named the generations and the lands:

Ibn Taymiyyah gathered their statements:

Al-Ḥumaydī said: I heard Wakīʿ say: Ahl al-Sunnah say: Īmān is speech and action. The Murjiʾah say: Īmān is speech. The Jahmiyyah say: Īmān is knowledge. In another report from him: And this is disbelief. Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Kilābī said: I heard Wakīʿ say: The Jahmiyyah are worse than the Qadariyyah. He said: And Wakīʿ said: The Murjiʾah are those who say that acknowledgement suffices in place of action, and whoever says this has perished; and whoever says that the intention suffices in place of action, that is disbelief, and it is the saying of Jahm. Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said likewise. For this reason the statement that īmān is speech and action is, among Ahl al-Sunnah, one of the marks of the Sunnah, and more than one has reported the consensus upon it. We have given what al-Shāfiʿī mentioned of the consensus upon that, in his statement in al-Umm: The consensus of the Companions, of the Successors after them and of those whom we have met was that they said that īmān is speech, action and intention; no one of the three suffices without the others. Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned in his Manāqib: I heard Ḥarmalah say: Ḥafṣ al-Fard and Miṣlān al-Ibāḍī met at al-Shāfiʿī’s in the house of al-Jarawī and debated with him about īmān. Miṣlān argued for increase and decrease and Ḥafṣ al-Fard opposed him. Al-Shāfiʿī grew warm and took up the question, that īmān is speech and action which increases and decreases, and he ground Ḥafṣ al-Fard down and cut him off. Abū ʿAmr al-Ṭalamankī reported with his well-known chain from Mūsā ibn Hārūn al-Ḥammāl, who said: Isḥāq ibn Rāhawayh dictated to us that īmān is speech and action which increases and decreases. There is no doubt that it is as we have described. We only understood this through the authentic narrations, the general and firm reports, and individuals among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Successors, and so on from them. And likewise the people of knowledge after the Successors were upon one thing, not differing over it. And likewise in the time of al-Awzāʿī in al-Shām, Sufyān al-Thawrī in Iraq, Mālik ibn Anas in the Ḥijāz and Maʿmar in Yemen, upon what we have explained and made clear: that īmān is speech and action which increases and decreases.

So that is the east and the west of the Muslim world in the second century, in the words of one who knew them. Wakīʿ’s three sentences are the map of the whole subject, and the rest of this chapter follows it.

Al-Bukhārī opened his book with revelation and then with this chapter. At its head he stated the creed in his own words, and he gave its proofs from the Book:

Al-Bukhārī said at the head of Kitāb al-Īmān:

Chapter of īmān, and the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: “Islam is built upon five”, and it is speech and action, and it increases and decreases. Allah the Exalted said: “so that they may increase in faith along with their faith”; “and We increased them in guidance”; “and Allah increases those who are guided in guidance”; “and those who are guided, He increases them in guidance and gives them their piety”; “and those who believe may increase in faith”; and His words: “Which of you has this increased in faith? As for those who believe, it has increased them in faith”; and His words, Mighty is His mention: “Fear them; but it increased them in faith”; and the words of the Exalted: “And it only increased them in faith and submission.” And love for the sake of Allah and hatred for the sake of Allah are from īmān. And ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz wrote to ʿAdī ibn ʿAdī: Īmān has obligations, laws, limits and practices. Whoever completes them has completed īmān, and whoever does not complete them has not completed īmān. If I live I shall explain them to you so that you may act upon them, and if I die, I am not eager for your company.

Part Four

Principles drawn from the evidence

Fifth Issue: Its Increase and Decrease, and What Causes Them

Allah, the Exalted, said in Sūrat al-Tawbah:

And whenever a sūrah is sent down, among them are those who say: Which of you has this increased in faith? As for those who believe, it has increased them in faith, and they rejoice.

Sūrat al-Tawbah, 9:124 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)

The Qurʾān names the increase when the verses come down, and names it again when tranquillity comes down.

And He said in Sūrat al-Fatḥ:

It is He who sent down tranquillity into the hearts of the believers, so that they may increase in faith along with their faith. And to Allah belong the armies of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.

Sūrat al-Fatḥ, 48:4 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)

It increases in each of its parts. The acknowledgement of the heart increases, for the report of one man does not settle in the heart as the report of two does, and neither is like seeing it oneself. For this reason Ibrāhīm, peace be upon him, asked to be shown how the dead are given life. When he was asked, “Have you not believed?”, he said, “Yes, but so that my heart be at rest.” And a person finds this in himself: he sits in a gathering where Paradise and the Fire are mentioned, and his certainty grows until it is as though he is looking at them; and when he leaves and grows heedless, it lessens. The speech increases, for the one who remembers Allah a hundred times has more than the one who remembers Him ten times. And the action increases, whether by its amount or by the quality of its performance.

He gives the causes of the increase. The first is knowing Allah by His Names and Attributes. So those who know them most are the strongest in faith from this aspect, and here is why the rest of these chapters matter. The second is reflecting upon His signs, in creation and in revelation, for He said, “And in the earth are signs for those who are certain, and in yourselves. Will you not see?” The third is abundance of obedience, in speech and in action, for each increases faith in amount and in quality.

The causes of decrease are their opposites: ignorance of the Names and Attributes; turning away from reflection on the signs, which leaves faith weakened or, at the least, stagnant; committing sins, for the Prophet ﷺ said, “The adulterer does not commit adultery while he is a believer when he does it”; and leaving obedience. On the last, he adds a distinction of importance. If the obedience was obligatory and was left without an excuse, the decrease is one that he is blamed and punished for. If it was not obligatory, or was left for an excuse, it is a decrease with no blame attached. So he explains the deficiency in religion that the Prophet ﷺ mentioned in women, which he gave as their not praying or fasting in menstruation, though they are commanded to leave them then.

When someone denies increase, he answers from what people already know (Q. 28). A trustworthy man tells you that a certain person has arrived in the city, and you believe it. A second man tells you the same, and you are surer. Then you see the man with your own eyes. No one disputes this. And if words and deeds are part of it, it is plain that people differ in them.

Sixth Issue: Islām and Īmān

When the two are mentioned together, as in the ḥadīth of Jibrīl, Islām refers to the outward acts and īmān to the inner beliefs. When one is mentioned alone, it includes the other. The Book separates them in one verse:

He said in Sūrat al-Ḥujurāt:

The bedouins say: We have believed. Say: You have not believed; but say: We have submitted, for faith has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not diminish your deeds at all. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. The believers are only those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then have not doubted, and have striven with their wealth and their lives in the way of Allah. Those are the truthful.

So a person can be a Muslim in the judgement of this world and yet not have reached the level called īmān. This was a distinction which both the Khawārij and the Murjiʾah failed to draw. They treated the outward ruling of Islam, which is either established or not, as if it were the reality of īmān, which has grades. Ibn Taymiyyah gives this as the answer to the argument which the Murjiʾah draw from the ḥadīth of the slave girl, when the Prophet ﷺ said “Free her, for she is a believer”:

He said in Kitāb al-Īmān:

As for their arguing from his words about the slave girl, “Free her, for she is a believer”, it is among their well-known arguments, and Ibn Kullāb argued from it, and he used to say that īmān is belief and speech together, so that his saying was nearer than the saying of Jahm and his followers. But there is no proof in this, because the outward īmān upon which rulings in this world are applied does not entail the inward īmān whose possessor is among the people of happiness in the Hereafter.

Seventh Issue: Saying “I am a believer, if Allah wills”

The Salaf would add “if Allah wills” when they spoke of their own faith. This was not doubt about what they believed, and Ibn Taymiyyah explains the several reasons for which they did it:

He said:

The origin of this is that they used to make the exception in īmān, as is reported from the Salaf, so that one of them would say: I am a believer, if Allah wills. And they used to make the exception in deeds of righteousness, so that one of them would say: I have prayed, if Allah wills. What the Salaf meant by this exception is either that he cannot be certain that he has done what is obligatory as Allah and His Messenger commanded, and so doubts whether Allah has accepted it, and so he makes the exception; or doubt about how he will end; or he makes the exception because all matters occur only by the will of Allah.

Each reason follows from the Sunnī definition. If īmān included everything that has been commanded, no one could claim to have completed it, and to say “I am a believer” without qualification would be a claim to piety. Whoever defines it as a single unchanging belief has no reason to say this, and so the Murjiʾah called the exception doubt, and they used to test Ahl al-Sunnah by asking “Are you a believer?” As for the one who says it out of doubt in the belief itself, that is forbidden, and it is not what is meant here.

Eighth Issue: The Sinner: Neither Stripped of Faith nor Complete in It

Ibn Taymiyyah said in al-Wāsiṭiyyah:

With that, they do not declare the people of the qiblah disbelievers for mere acts of disobedience and major sins, as the Khawārij do. Rather, the brotherhood of faith remains with acts of disobedience, as He, the Glorified, said in the verse of retaliation: “And whoever is pardoned by his brother in anything, then let there be a following in what is right.” And He said: “And if two parties of the believers fight, then make peace between them. And if one of them oppresses the other, then fight the one that oppresses until it returns to the command of Allah. And if it returns, then make peace between them with justice and be equitable. Indeed, Allah loves the equitable. The believers are only brothers, so make peace between your two brothers.” And they do not strip the wicked member of the religion of the name of īmān altogether, and they do not make him abide forever in the Fire, as the Muʿtazilah say. Rather, the wicked man enters under the name of īmān in such words as those of the Exalted, “then the freeing of a believing slave”. And he does not always enter under the absolute name of īmān, as in the words of the Exalted, “The believers are only those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned, and when His verses are recited to them, they increase them in faith”, and his words ﷺ: “The adulterer does not commit adultery while he is a believer when he commits adultery, and the thief does not steal while he is a believer when he steals, and he does not drink wine while he is a believer when he drinks it, and he does not plunder a plunder of value, to which people raise their eyes, while he is a believer when he plunders it.” They say: he is a believer deficient in faith, or a believer by his faith and wicked by his major sin. So he is not given the absolute name, and he is not stripped of the name absolutely.

The last sentence is the rule. It distinguishes al-īmān al-muṭlaq, complete faith, from muṭlaq al-īmān, faith in some degree. The major sinner has lost the first and has kept the second. The ḥadīth “The adulterer does not commit adultery while he is a believer” denies him the first, and the verse of the two fighting parties gives him the second, for it calls them believers and brothers while they are fighting.

This also explains the texts in which a sin is called kufr. The Prophet ﷺ said of the believer’s blood:

Al-Bukhārī reported in his Ṣaḥīḥ:

Muḥammad ibn ʿArʿarah narrated to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Zubayd, who said: I asked Abū Wāʾil about the Murjiʾah, and he said: ʿAbd Allāh narrated to me that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Reviling a Muslim is wickedness, and fighting him is kufr.”

al-Bukhārī, al-Ṣaḥīḥ (al-Sulṭāniyyah) 1/19, no. 48

Source, chain and authenticity

Authentic. It is in the Ṣaḥīḥ of al-Bukhārī, and the ummah received the two Ṣaḥīḥs with acceptance; its full chain is given in the Arabic above.

Abū Wāʾil answered a question about the Murjiʾah with this ḥadīth, for they say that sins do no harm to faith. And it cannot mean the kufr that takes one out of Islam, since Allah called the two fighting parties believers. This is what the Salaf meant by kufr less than kufr, and it is how they explained the verse of ruling:

Abū ʿUbayd said in Kitāb al-Īmān:

As for the criterion that bears witness to it in the revelation, it is the word of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed, then those are the disbelievers.” Ibn ʿAbbās said: “It is not a kufr that takes one out of the religion.” And ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ said: “Kufr less than kufr.”

So kufr is of two kinds: the greater, which takes one out of the religion, and the lesser, which is a major sin that has been given this name for its gravity, and which does not take one out. The same is said of shirk, oppression and wickedness. The major sinner is under the will of Allah: “Indeed, Allah does not forgive that partners be associated with Him, and He forgives what is less than that for whomever He wills.”

Part Five

The claims of the opponents and their refutation

“Īmān is one thing: if part of it goes, all of it goes”

The claim

The premise shared by the Khawārij, the Muʿtazilah, the Murjiʾah and the Jahmiyyah

A compound thing ceases to exist when one of its parts ceases, as ten is no longer ten when one is taken away. So īmān cannot be partly present.

Its origin It came from the first dispute in the ummah, over the takfīr of ʿAlī, and then from the logic of the theologians, in which a definition must have one sense common to all who have the thing defined.

The response

Ibn Taymiyyah gave the root of the whole dispute:

The root of the dispute of these sects concerning īmān, of the Khawārij, the Murjiʾah, the Muʿtazilah, the Jahmiyyah and others, is that they made īmān one thing: if part of it ceases, all of it ceases; and if part of it is established, all of it is established. So they did not say that part of it goes and part of it stays, as the Prophet ﷺ said: “There will come out of the Fire whoever has in his heart the weight of a grain of īmān.” Then the Khawārij and the Muʿtazilah said: All acts of obedience are from īmān; so if some of them go, some of īmān goes, and so the rest of it goes. And they ruled that the one who commits a major sin has nothing of īmān with him. And the Murjiʾah and the Jahmiyyah said: Īmān is nothing but one thing which is not divided, either the mere belief of the heart, as the Jahmiyyah say, or the belief of the heart and the tongue, as the Murjiʾah say. They said: Because if we include deeds in it, they become a part of it, and when they go, part of it goes, and it then follows that the man who commits a major sin is taken out of īmān, which is the saying of the Muʿtazilah and the Khawārij. But it can have necessary consequences and indications.

He has given their position. He next states what their whole argument comes to.

He stated their argument in the next passage:

The sum of their doubt in this is that a compound reality ceases with the ceasing of some of its parts, as with ten, for when part of it ceases it no longer remains ten; and likewise compound bodies, like oxymel: when one of its two parts ceases, it leaves off being oxymel. They said: So if īmān is compounded of sayings and deeds, outward and inward, it follows that it ceases with the ceasing of some of them. This is the saying of the Khawārij and the Muʿtazilah. They said: And it follows that a man would be a believer by the īmān in him and a disbeliever by the kufr in him.

The Prophet ﷺ has already answered this, when he named its branches and spoke of the atom’s weight of it. The word “ten” is the name of a number and has no degrees. The word “īmān” is like the word “tree” or “prayer” or “man”. A tree that loses a branch is still a tree. A man who loses a hand is still a man, and a deficient one. Some of the parts are such that the thing does not survive them, as a tree does not survive the loss of its root or a man the loss of his head, and so with the testimony and with the action of the heart. Others are completions, and others again are ornaments. For that reason the Prophet ﷺ spoke of the highest and the lowest. As for a man’s being a believer by what he has of īmān and having some branch of kufr, Allah said of a group of people, “And most of them do not believe in Allah except while they associate partners with Him”, and the Prophet ﷺ spoke of four traits which make a person a pure hypocrite, and of those who have one of them.

“The one who commits a major sin is a disbeliever”

The claim

Said by the Khawārij; the Muʿtazilah take him out of īmān without calling him a disbeliever and agree that he abides in the Fire forever

Whoever commits a major sin has left Islam and will be punished forever.

Its origin It began when they declared ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib a disbeliever over the arbitration.

The response

Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī recorded their doctrine in Maqālāt al-Islāmiyyīn:

The Khawārij are agreed upon declaring ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib a disbeliever if he arbitrated, and they differ as to whether his disbelief is shirk or not. And they are agreed that every major sin is disbelief, except for the Najdāt, for they do not say that. And they are agreed that Allah, the Glorified, punishes those who commit major sins with an everlasting punishment, except for the Najdāt, the followers of Najdah.

The replies come from the texts given above, and they cannot be evaded. Allah called the two fighting parties believers and brothers. He called the killer the brother of the man he killed in the verse of retaliation, and a disbeliever is no one’s brother in faith. The law has prescribed lashing for the drinker and the fornicator and cutting off the hand of the thief. If these acts were apostasy, the penalty would be death, and the Prophet ﷺ would not have prayed for those who were punished. And the people who said “lā ilāhah illā Allāh” come out of the Fire with an atom’s weight, so the Fire is not everlasting for them.

As for the Muʿtazilah, who say that he has left īmān without entering kufr and yet abides in the Fire forever, they have invented a place between two places which the Book does not know, and then they have given him the same end as the Khawārij do. So they differ from them in the name and agree with them in the result.

“Īmān is knowledge of Allah only”

The claim

Said by Jahm ibn Ṣafwān

Īmān is knowing Allah and nothing else, and disbelief is being ignorant of Him and nothing else.

Its origin It is Jahm’s own doctrine, joined by him to his doctrine that no one acts in reality except Allah.

The response

Al-Ashʿarī recorded it in Maqālāt al-Islāmiyyīn:

What Jahm was alone in is the saying that Paradise and the Fire will perish and pass away, and that īmān is knowledge of Allah only, and disbelief is ignorance of Him only.

On this doctrine Iblīs is a believer, for he knows his Lord and has addressed Him and sworn by His power. Pharaoh is a believer, for Allah said of Pharaoh’s people, “And they denied them, while their souls were convinced of them, out of oppression and arrogance”. The Jews who “recognise him as they recognise their own sons” are believers. And Abū Ṭālib, who knew that his nephew was truthful, and died refusing to say the testimony. Wakīʿ said that this is disbelief, as has been quoted above, and Aḥmad said the same of whoever says that intention suffices in place of action.

“Īmān is only belief in the heart, for that is what the word means in Arabic”

The claim

Said by al-Bāqillānī, and by the later Ashʿarīs and Māturīdīs who hold that speech is only a condition for the rulings of this world

The Arabs knew no meaning for īmān except taṣdīq. Allah did not change their language. So īmān in the Sharīʿah is the belief that is in the heart, and no act of obedience belongs to it.

Its origin Ibn Taymiyyah ties it to the saying of Jahm and al-Ṣāliḥī, which al-Rāzī followed, and he says that later Ḥanafīs such as Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī took the same position on the root of the question (Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā 7/510–511).

The response

Al-Bāqillānī said in al-Tamhīd:

We say: īmān is belief in Allah the Exalted, and it is knowledge, and belief exists in the heart. If he says: What is the proof of what you said? It is said to him: The consensus of the people of the language, all of them, that īmān in the language before the revelation of the Qurʾān and the sending of the Prophet ﷺ is belief; they do not know in their language any īmān other than that. And it is indicated by the words of the Exalted, “But you are not a believer in us, even if we were truthful”, that is, you are not one who holds us truthful. And by their saying: So-and-so believes in the intercession, and so-and-so does not believe in the punishment of the grave, that is, he does not hold that true. So it must be that īmān in the Sharīʿah is the īmān that is known in the language, because Allah did not change the language of the Arabs or reverse it. If He had done that, reports of what He did would have been mass-transmitted, and the motives of the ummah would have been abundant to transmit it, and its being shown and publicised would have overcome its being folded up and hidden. And in our knowing that He did not do that, and rather left the names of things and all speech as they were, there is proof that īmān in the Law is the linguistic īmān. It is further shown and made clear by the words of the Exalted, “And We did not send any Messenger except in the language of his people”, and His words, “Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qurʾān”. So He informed that He sent down the Qurʾān in the language of the people and named things by their names. Then there is no way to turn from the apparent sense of these verses without proof, especially with their saying on generality and with its being established that the address came down in their language. So what we have said shows that īmān is what we have described, and not anything else of the other acts of obedience, voluntary and obligatory.

al-Bāqillānī, Tamhīd al-Awāʾil p. 389–390

Source, chain and authenticity

He rests the entire doctrine upon two premises, as Ibn Taymiyyah says of those who argue this way (Kitāb al-Īmān, p. 227): that īmān is a synonym of taṣdīq, and that the Sharīʿah did not add to it. The first has been answered at the start of this chapter, and neither the grammar nor the usage supports it. As for his proof from the verse of Yūsuf, Ibn Taymiyyah points out that the sense being acceptable in that one place does not make the words synonyms, and that the whole of the religion is not to be built upon one word in one sūrah when the meaning of īmān has been transmitted by the whole ummah through its acts and teaching.

The second premise contradicts what al-Bāqillānī himself must accept. Prayer in the language means supplication, zakāh means growth and ḥajj means intending. No one says that the Arabs’ language was reversed by the Sharīʿah, and no one says that the man who supplicates has thereby prayed. The Prophet ﷺ himself explained īmān by the branches, and Allah called prayer īmān in the verse of the qiblah. And there is the question which this doctrine cannot answer: is the man a believer who says, “I hold in my heart that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah”, and curses him with his tongue and refuses him, while under no compulsion? On their premise he has lost nothing that belongs to īmān. So they have to say that his cursing is only a sign that the belief has gone. And that is a claim about what is in his heart which they do not know, made to escape what they have said.

Note also the lesser of the two: al-Ḥumaydī reported that some people said that whoever acknowledges prayer, zakāh, fasting and ḥajj and does none of them until he dies is a believer, and he said:

Ibn Taymiyyah reports:

Ḥanbal said: al-Ḥumaydī narrated to us, who said: I was told that some people say that whoever acknowledges prayer, zakāh, fasting and ḥajj and does nothing of that until he dies, and prays with his back to the qiblah until he dies, is a believer so long as he does not deny it, if he knows that his faith lies in his leaving that, when he acknowledges the obligations and the facing of the qiblah. So I said: This is plain disbelief, and it opposes the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Messenger and the scholars of the Muslims. Allah the Exalted said: “And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, making the religion sincerely His”, the verse.

“Īmān is acknowledgement with the tongue and belief in the heart”

The claim

Said by Ḥammād ibn Abī Sulaymān, Abū Ḥanīfah and the jurists of Kūfah who followed them, and it is stated in al-ʿAqīdah al-Ṭaḥāwiyyah

Īmān is the acknowledgement of the tongue and the belief of the heart. Deeds are obligatory, and the sinner is punished, but deeds do not belong to īmān, and it does not vary.

Its origin It was a reaction to the Khawārij from those who did not hold their premise and thought that they could only refute them this way.

The response

Al-Ṭaḥāwī said in his creed:

And īmān is acknowledgement with the tongue and belief in the heart.

al-Ṭaḥāwī, al-ʿAqīdah al-Ṭaḥāwiyyah, §62

Such is the irjāʾ of the jurists, which must be kept apart from the irjāʾ of Jahm. The people who held it did not say that sins do no harm. They say that deeds are obligatory, that the sinner is under threat, and that the Fire will take some of them. So the difference with them is less than with the others, and Ibn Taymiyyah gave its measure:

He said in Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā:

Ḥammād ibn Abī Sulaymān and those who followed him denied the variation of īmān, the inclusion of deeds in it and the exception in it; and these are among the Murjiʾah of the jurists. As for Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī, the imam of the people of Kūfah and the shaykh of Ḥammād ibn Abī Sulaymān, and those like him, and those before him among the companions of Ibn Masʿūd, such as ʿAlqamah and al-Aswad, they were among the fiercest of people in opposing the Murjiʾah, and they used to make the exception in īmān. But Ḥammād ibn Abī Sulaymān opposed his predecessors, and those who followed him followed him, and groups of the people of Kūfah and those after them entered into this. Then the Salaf and the imams became severe in their rejection of these people, in declaring them innovators and in speaking harshly of them; and I do not know of anyone among them who spoke of declaring them disbelievers. Rather, they are agreed that they are not declared disbelievers for this. Aḥmad and others of the imams have stated expressly that these Murjiʾah are not declared disbelievers. Whoever reports from Aḥmad or from others of the imams a declaration of disbelief upon these people, or makes them among the people of innovation about whose disbelief there is a dispute, has made a very great mistake.

So both extremes are mistakes: to call them disbelievers, and to treat the matter as a dispute over words which does no harm. The Salaf were severe with this saying because of what it opened. Once deeds are outside of īmān, it can be said that a man’s īmān is like the īmān of Jibrīl, whatever he does, and the texts on the branches and on the increase have to be explained away. The Ṭaḥāwī creed adds that īmān is one and that its people are equal in its root, and the verses already quoted say otherwise, as do the grains and the atom. The reply to them is what has been given: the verses of al-Anfāl and al-Baqarah, the ḥadīth of the branches, and the consensus reported by al-Shāfiʿī and Isḥāq.

“Major shirk committed in ignorance leaves its doer a Muslim”

The claim

Those who defend the callers upon the dead by pleading their ignorance

Whoever calls upon the dead, sacrifices to them or circles their graves without knowing that it is shirk remains a Muslim, because ignorance excuses in every matter of the religion.

Its origin The plea takes statements of Ibn Taymiyyah on the ignorant and the mistaken and extends them to the one who worships other than Allah.

The response

Every part of this question rests on a distinction which the claim above erases. Ignorance of a fine matter is one thing, and ignorance of what the Messengers were sent with is another. A man’s saying “I did not know” has a place in the first and none in the second, since the Messengers came with nothing before tawḥīd. Allah made the sending of the Messenger the end of every excuse, and the proof of the claimant, the verse of the Messenger’s sending, is the first proof against him.

Allah, the Exalted, said in Sūrat al-Isrāʾ:

Whoever is guided is guided only for his own soul, and whoever goes astray goes astray only against it. And no bearer of burdens bears the burden of another. And We never punish until We have sent a Messenger.

Sūrat al-Isrāʾ, 17:15 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)

So the sending of the Messenger ends the excuse. The next verse says how that sending reaches a person who never met him.

And He said in Sūrat al-Anʿām:

Say: What thing is greatest in testimony? Say: Allah is witness between me and you. And this Qurʾān has been revealed to me that I warn you by it and whomever it reaches. Do you indeed testify that there are other gods with Allah? Say: I do not testify. Say: He is only one God, and I am free of what you associate.

Sūrat al-Anʿām, 6:19 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)

“And whomever it reaches.” The Qurʾān is the warning, and its reaching a person is the arrival of the warning. Sulaymān ibn Saḥmān of the Najdī daʿwah traced the error of the claimants to its source, a misreading of Ibn Taymiyyah.

Sulaymān ibn Saḥmān said in Tamyīz al-Ṣidq min al-Mayn:

The source of the error is that when these people heard the words of the Shaykh [Ibn Taymiyyah], in some of his answers, stating that the ignorant, the mistaken mujtahid and the one who interprets are not declared disbelievers, they thought that this covered every error, every ignorance, every ijtihād and every interpretation. They spoke generally and did not distinguish, and that is pure error. For not every ijtihād, ignorance, error and interpretation is forgiven its owner and kept from making him a disbeliever. As for what is known by necessity from the religion of Islam, such as belief in Allah and His Messenger and what he brought, no one is excused by ignorance of that. Allah has told of the ignorance of many of the disbelievers while stating their disbelief explicitly, and He has described the Christians with ignorance, though no Muslim doubts their disbelief. We are certain that most of the Jews and Christians today are ignorant followers, and we hold that they are disbelievers, and that whoever doubts their disbelief is a disbeliever.

His proof from the Christians is unanswerable on the claimant’s own terms. If ignorance excused from the worship of other than Allah, it would excuse the ignorant Christian who prays to the Messiah in good faith, and no Muslim says that. Then he names the acts in question.

And he said:

The Qurʾān has shown that doubt in the foundations of the religion is disbelief. Doubt is wavering between two things, like one who is not certain of the truthfulness of the Messenger or of his lying, who is not certain whether the resurrection will happen or not, and the like; or one who does not hold that the prayer is obligatory or that it is not, or does not hold that adultery is forbidden or that it is not. That is disbelief by the consensus of the scholars, and there is no excuse for one in this state on account of his not having understood the proofs and clear signs of Allah, for he has no excuse after they have reached him, even if he did not understand them.

He has spoken of doubt. He then names the acts themselves.

And he said:

So the specific person from whom has come what requires his disbelief, in matters known by necessity, such as worshipping other than Allah, the Glorified, and denying the highness of Allah over His creation, negating the attributes of His perfection and the descriptions of His majesty, essential and active, and the question of His knowledge of events and existing things before they exist: to bar takfīr and the attribution of sin on the grounds of error and ignorance in all of this is a rejection of those who declared disbelievers the deniers of the Essence, the deniers of lordship, the deniers of the Names and Attributes, the deniers of His being singled out with divinity, those who say that Allah does not know things before they exist, such as the extreme Qadariyyah, those who attribute events to the higher stars, and those who hold to the two principles of light and darkness. Whoever holds to all of this is further in disbelief and further astray than the Jews and the Christians.

And he pressed the reductio to its end, asking whether anything other than error in this door brought the people of incarnation and union to where they stand, what brought the Qarāmiṭah to where they stood, and what brought the Rāfiḍah to the worship of the twelve imams. Each of them had a mistaken ijtihād to plead. If error excuses in the worship of other than Allah, it excuses all of them.

What of a person who lives among Muslims and hears the Qurʾān recited? The rule is that the ignorance which excuses is the ignorance of something fine and hidden, of the kind that such a person would not know; whoever lives among Muslims is not excused in what is plain, and whoever is able to ask and does not ask is not excused. The ignorant are further divided. That final class is very rare in a land where the muṣḥaf is sold in the market. And the man who sought aid from the Prophet ﷺ in ignorance and never repented, if he continued upon that belief without repenting, remains upon his shirk though he prayed and fasted, because a nullifier voids the deeds until there is repentance, as the verse of Sūrat al-Zumar states:

Allah, the Exalted, said in Sūrat al-Zumar:

And it has certainly been revealed to you and to those before you: If you commit shirk, your deed will surely become worthless, and you will surely be among the losers. Rather, worship Allah and be among the grateful.

Sūrat al-Zumar, 39:65–66 Read the verse (opens in a new tab)

The strongest text the claimant brings is an answer from within the daʿwah itself, and it has to be set out as it stands, because Shaykh ʿAbd Allāh the son of the Imām gave it plainly and his question was precisely this one.

Shaykh ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb was asked about one from whom disbelief proceeded in ignorance, and he answered:

If the person who believes in Allah and His Messenger does what is disbelief in its doing, or holds what is disbelief in its belief, out of ignorance of what Allah sent His Messenger ﷺ with, then he is not a disbeliever with us, and we do not rule him a disbeliever until the proof of the Message, whose opposer is declared a disbeliever, has been established against him. So if the proof has been established against him, and what the Messenger ﷺ brought has been made clear to him, and he persists in doing that after the proof has been established against him, then this is the one who is declared a disbeliever.

The same answer concludes with the sentence that decides how it is to be read:

He said:

And everyone whom the Qurʾān has reached, the proof has been established against him by the Messenger ﷺ, but the ignorant person needs someone of the people of knowledge to make that known to him.

On the one who circles a grave without knowing that it is shirk, two statements of the people of knowledge are reported, and Ibn Taymiyyah and others mentioned both. On the first, he is excused in that state, misled as he is by scholars of evil who dress shirk up for him, and he has the ruling of the people of the interval; this is attributed to Shaykh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, who said that he declares no one a disbeliever until the proof is established. On the second, no one is excused after the sending of the Messenger, for the Messenger has been sent, the Qurʾān has come down, it is recited, and its texts on shirk are clear. Mark what the first statement grants: this man is still dealt with in this world as the mushrikūn are dealt with. He is not washed, not prayed over and not buried in the graves of the Muslims.

So here is what is left of the claim. It said that he remains a Muslim. Neither of the two statements says so. The most that the first statement gives him is the suspension of the final judgement and the ruling of the people of the interval, while in this world he is treated as a mushrik. The second statement, which is the one this chapter holds, gives him not even that, for the reasons Ibn Saḥmān gives and the verse of Sūrat al-Isrāʾ states: the Messenger has been sent and the Qurʾān has reached him. The one who prays toward the Kaʿbah and calls on the man in the tomb has heard “And do not call, besides Allah”, or he has refused to hear it. A person is called a mushrik because of what he does, and it is his deed which gives him the name, just as the one who commits adultery is called an adulterer before anyone has told him the penalty.

As for the man who ordered his family to burn him, he is the first proof they reach for, and it does not help them. Ibn Saḥmān answers that this man doubted a detail of Allah’s power while being a muwaḥḥid and no mushrik, since the report says that he did no good at all except tawḥīd. It was a fine matter that was hidden from him, and what drove him was fear and not obstinacy. He called on no one but Allah, he feared Allah alone, and he was forgiven out of the very tawḥīd that the claimant’s client has abandoned. And when the Companions asked for Dhāt Anwāṭ, they asked before doing, and they stopped when they were told.

One thing remains, and the Najdī answer that gives it does not soften the ruling. For the one who died upon these acts before anyone told him, the answer in al-Rasāʾil wa-l-Masāʾil al-Najdiyyah says that the best reply is that Allah knows best about them, as Mūsā said of the former generations, and it gives this reason:

It says in al-Rasāʾil wa-l-Masāʾil al-Najdiyyah:

That is because whomever the Qurʾān has reached, the proof has been established against him: “That I warn you by it and whomever it reaches.” And He said: “So that mankind have no argument against Allah after the Messengers.” Most people in these times and other times of interval and ignorance turn away from asking about tawḥīd and shirk. His religion is what the people of his land are upon. He neither investigates nor asks about what Muḥammad ﷺ brought from Allah, nor what the righteous Salaf and those who followed them in goodness were upon. And whoever investigates, asks and looks into it finds someone to teach him, because there will not cease to be in this Ummah a group upon the truth, victorious, unharmed by those who abandon them or oppose them until the Hour comes, and it is protected from uniting upon misguidance and shirk.

That passage describes the claimant’s client exactly: his religion is what the people of his land are upon, and he does not ask. The search that would have cost him one question was always open to him. Ignorance of that kind is a sin in itself, and it is no shelter from a greater one.

Declaring a specific person a disbeliever, and carrying out any consequence of it, belongs to scholars and to courts with their conditions. It is not open to every reader of this chapter. That does not touch the ruling on the deed or the name of the one who does it, and it gives no one leave to call that deed Islam.

The same point was made by a jurist far from the Najdī daʿwah. Al-Nawawī the Shāfiʿī said in explaining the ḥadīth of Jābir, as the commentator quotes him:

Al-Nawawī said, as quoted in Fatḥ al-Majīd:

As for the entry of the mushrik into the Fire, it is general: he enters it and abides in it forever. There is no difference in this between the Jew and the Christian of the People of the Book and the worshippers of idols and the rest of the disbelievers. And there is no difference, according to the people of the truth, between the one who disbelieves out of obstinacy and anyone else, nor between one who opposes the religion of Islam and one who ascribes himself to it and is then ruled a disbeliever through his denial or otherwise.

“Between the one who disbelieves out of obstinacy and anyone else.” And “one who ascribes himself to it”. These two clauses address exactly the man whom the claim wished to exclude.

The words of Shaykh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb in Kashf al-Shubuhāt are the plainest statement of the position this chapter holds.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb said in Kashf al-Shubuhāt:

For when you know that a person disbelieves by a word that he brings out from his tongue, and he says it while he is ignorant and is not excused by ignorance, and he says it while he thinks that it brings him near to Allah, as the mushrikūn thought.

* قال الشيخ ﵀:

“Ignorant” here has been read as ignorance of the degree of the ruling. A person knows that the word is foul and vile and says only that he did not know it was disbelief, and that plea does not help him, just as someone who knows a sin is forbidden gets no excuse by saying that he did not know it was major. Distinct from that are those who asked Mūsā for a god, and the Companions who asked for Dhāt Anwāṭ. They asked in ignorance and with good intention, they came seeking guidance, they did nothing, and they stopped when they were told; and so they did not disbelieve. Had they actually taken an idol they would have disbelieved, and the Muslim who speaks of such a thing is rebuked sternly. The plea tries to erase that line, between a question that was asked and an act that was done.

Apostasy divides into what admits no excuse, such as denying the existence of Allah and declaring the Messenger ﷺ a liar, for which the person is ruled a disbeliever in every case because what he denied is the greatest of necessary truths; and what admits the excuse of ignorance or interpretation, such as denying some of what the Messenger ﷺ brought of reports and laws, for which he is not ruled a disbeliever until the proof is established, because of the possibilities that lead to the denial, such as the proofs being obscure. So the disagreement concerns where each act falls under this division. Calling upon other than Allah is neither a fine question nor an obscure proof. It is what the Qurʾān was sent down to end.
